The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

How to I access a Progress Database using OpenEdge tools?

Asked by adexio in Progress 4GL Database

Tags: Progress Database, OpenEdge

Hello,
I want to migrate data from a Progress database to an MSSQL 2005 database, but I am having trouble getting access to the data. I have no previous experience with Progress or Open Edge products.

The server hosting the progress database appears to have a number of OpenEdge tools installed, including a 'progress explorer tool' and 'SQL Explorer tool'. My hope was to use the SQL Explorer tool to execute select statements against the database.

The Progress Explorer tool lets me 'connect' to the local Progress server and lists two databases. When I enter the same details used to connect to the Progress Explorer application:
Machine name (localhost), port number (20931), database (as appears in the Progress Explorer tool) into the SQL Explorer Tool I get the error:

Error: [JDBC OpenEdge Driver]:Server did not respond. (8933)

The SQL Explorer generates a connection string. It looks like this:
jdbc:jdbcprogress:T:localhost:20931:ServicePRO_Live

Can anyone suggest a method I can use to retrieve the correct connection details for this Progress database, or perhaps another method I can use to connect to the database and execute SQL commands against it.

The company who built the application that uses the Progress database will not provide any details about it how it is installed or managed.

The version information is:

       Product Name      : Progress
       Install Path      : C:\Progress\OpenEdge
       Version      : 10.0B
       Service Pack      : 05
       Temp. Fix      : 00
       Build            : 1475

Many thanks in advance!
