Question

PVSW.log file error messages. How to correct?

Asked by: amerretz

Hi,

Below is the output of my PVSW.log file which I have obtained from System32 directory. The network is setup with pervasive / betrieve workgroup v8.6. All users log files are the same. I have WINS setup on the Windows Server 2003 Server and have set the gateway locator to the correct path. Can someone please advise as to why I might be having these entries appear in the log file. Thanks.

Looks like you've got all three Supported Protocols listed but only have TCP/IP and NETBIOS.  I would suggest looking at the Pervasive Monitor to see which protocol you are using to communicate between the engine and the client.  It's most likely TCP/IP.  Once you've found that, remove the other protocols from the "Support Protocols" setting in the PCC/Configuration.  You'll need to restart the engine after any change.
There's also the following:
 System Error: 116.5.0 File: \\SERVER\SERVER\APPS\PAS52\V7PASTEL\0BELLCON\ACCCBCUR.DAT
This usually indicates a corrupt file.  I would suggest rebuilding it.
There's also:
System Error: 620.9.64 File: \\SERVER\SERVER\APPS\PAS52\V7PASTEL\0BELLCON\ACCHISTH.DAT
The 620 is a "Windows" specific code error. The 9 is the operation (Get Greater THan or Equal).  The 64 is the OS error that means "The specified network name is no longer available."  It could be related to a network instability.

That's great. Spot On!... I checked the server's workgroup engine and, yes, it did have NetBIOS and IPX / SPX enabled as protocols. This maybe the cause to all my problems. Do you know of a way to change the protocol's in control manager for multiple workstations all at once? Or, do I have to go to each machine and change the settings manually. Thanks.

Don't bother posting onto dbforums. I'll post this information here onto their site later. Thanks!

The only way I can think of to change multiple workstations easily would be to export the registry key (HKLM\Software\Pervasive SOftware\...) and then import it on each workstation.  You would want to change one workstation, export it, then import on the others.  You would not want to export from the server engine and then import it to a client.
I haven't tried it so I'm not sure if it would work but it should.

Currently we have been getting WINS error's on the Windows Server 2003 Server. Do you think that the 620.9.64 and 116.5.0 error's are related to the fact that we had multiple protocols selected in the control manager OR that WINS was having problems?

The way I see it, having multiple protocols (NETBIOS) selected in the control manager will produce the WinSock socket() error=10022, BUT, because IPX /SPX & NETBIOS are not installed for the network adapters, this should not be the cause as pervasive will eventually find TCP /IP stack and use it. Do you agree?
