I am one of our admin's and I know enough about unix to barely find my way around. all ofour admins around the world know verry little of unix. 2 or 3 of us are familiar enough with linux to find our way around and slightly manage the boxes.
the application that interfaces with the database is a windows based application. It has been, more or less, desided that if possible we will go with a windows box for the database if we can.
I also agree, with everything I have seen and read, that going with a unix based system is much better for database applications. The problem in our env is the huge learning curve.

For database server Solaris (or other Unix system) is a lot better than Windows, eg, performance, Stability, and security, resource handling, flexible etc.
You can run the database server in Unix platform and use Web applications to access to the database from PC(or any client).

BTW, what to choice is also dependence on the administrator's experienced, and your application ENV.
