Run 4GL code on a Progress OpenEdge database

I have just started using 4GL but am interested in running and retrieving data using 4GL that is called through a vb.net application.
A simple scenario would be for a user to click on a button within a vb application and a call made to the database using 4GL to retrieve the data.

I dont know if this is possible but would appreciate any assistance. I can access the database through ODBC but have been advised that this is not recommended.
