If the column is the first field of an index then you can find it by using find first or find last, depending on wether the index is descending or ascending).<TABLE-NAME>
if the column isn't indexed then it is then you have to find it yourself
for instance for a character field you do it like in hte code snippet.
It is clear from this example that searching a maximum value in an unindexed field requires a table scan, which ofcourse is very bad for performance if the table is big.

What do you want to do exactly?
You can use plain sql92 to query the progress database. I guess you already tried it and are experiencing a problem?
select max(column_name) from pub.<table-name>;
or maybe you can use top like select top 1 .....
