Question

Postgresql from C++ on windows

Asked by: JSMCM

Hi all,

I am trying to switch from VB to C++. My first step is to try and connect to Postgresql from C++, but I have no idea how to do this.

I have followed the instructions here: http://pqxx.org/development/libpqxx/browser/trunk/win32/INSTALL.txt?rev=latest (I followed the parts between lines 172 and 202).

Anyway, when I try to run psql, I get the error in the image below...

Any idea why this error comes up? I've installed from source, not sure if I missed something.

Also, is there an easier way to connect to Postgresql from C++? I can't imagine my largely PC not-so-literate clients doing installations of these packages from source...

Thanks,

John

Do you have libpd.dll on your machine? If not, you'll need to get it and place it in the directory of the executable. You can get the binaries from http://www.postgresql.org/download/windows

Hi,

It actually didn't install with the rest of the installation. I copied from the source you mention in the link.

The real problem that I have is that this solution is not feasible to provide as is to my clients. I can't expect them to install software like this.

With VB, I package everything, there is a self extractor, self installer and the DB just works. With C++ I have to move mountains to get it to work.

Surely there must be a better way?

Thanks,

John

Hi all..

I'm going to change, or ask this question again, in a slightly different way. The problem is that I am really new to using C++. I know C fairly well, but not on PCs, in embedded environments.

Here is my problem. We use VB to connect to a postgres database server. I now want to move over to C++ because I really need to start writing OS independent software.

What I don't need is some low level access to the database server. All I require is to be able to query my database server (select, update, insert).

If I do a regular install of Postgres using their downloadable installers, I see that the header files and DLL's are there (libpq.dll).

Why can't I just put those headers into my own C++ app and use the functions to connect and query? Why do I need to go the whole route of installing from source? Seems like overkill to a simple use case?

The only other question then is, does this libpq.dll work over TCP / IP? Our database servers may be on one machine, or the application may be on a PC and the database on a server somewhere over the network...

Thanks...

John

That's clear. When you're done developing, you'd usually create an installation package where you include these binaries, that's what you distribute to your clients.

Hi jkr,

Thanks, I managed to get this to work by downloading the dll's from the location you pointed to.

Before you leave this thread though, one more question please.

I use MinGW / Msys, Postgresql (obviously) and gcc / g++.

I put my  code into a single test file called test.cpp.

When I compile I use the line:

g++ test.cpp -l libpd -o test.exe

However, this only compiles if I place the libpd file into the lib directory of MinGW, not if its in the same directory as my test.exe.

How do I specify a path on the command line to the lib, or, better yet, what should I be doing to make sure I'm doing these things correctly?

NOW -- for the benefit of those people reading this thread because they have the same problem....

To get this to work I used the setup as described above.

I downloaded the dll's as per the first comment and I found this website: http://www.linuxjournal.com/content/accessing-postgresql-cc

This is a quick and nasty example, but it works and I managed to get it running fairly quickly once I put all the pieces together. The author in this article is actually using Linux, but it works as is (provided you have the Windows DLLs) on Windows.
