Question

Trying to move Act 2006! to a new workstation as a host....It making me mad.....

Asked by: johnb6767

We are moving an Act 2006 database from one machine to another. It aint going so hot.....

Basically the machine was replaced, and we used various methods of getting it to the destination PC, including Exporting, Backing up and restoring, but it is still not making the connection. In comparing the old host to the new host, there is a service missing....

MSSQL$ACT7

What is this service for, and where is it installed from?

Even if copying the DB (including the .pad file and the .adf file locally, and still trying ot open, we are getting network connection errors.

Does MSDE need to be installed on the local host prior to installing ACT 2006 on the new machine for this to work?

Client is XP SP2, all patches.

That service is the name of the instance.  Instead of installing a Default instance, you need to install a named instance named ACT7

Could you elaborate on that please? I havent used act since 2000......

You need to install ACT!... the MSDE will install when you do that. MSSQL$ACT7 is the SQL instance with the database engine used by ACT!

Always good to disable any firewall and/or anti virus when doing the install.

Make sure you can open the demo database on the new machine... if not, the install might not have worked.

Then Backup from the old machine and do a Restore | Restore_As to the new machine

It will create new PAD file that you'll need to give to the other users (the PAD includes the server name)

If any step of this fails, let me know the exact error message

Does this SQL instance need to be on the clients, or just the HOST PC?

The MSDE should be installed when you install ACT! - any machine

It installs it's own instance

What happens (specific error) when openeding demo db?
Anything in Event Logs?

Is it Standard or Workgroups?

Thats a direct lionk to a screenshot....It could very well be a misconfiguration on the MSDE side of it. Is there a way to manually create the SQL instance in the MSDE?

by: johnb6767Posted on 2007-05-25 at 15:20:10ID: 19160233

"GLComputing:
The MSDE should be installed when you install ACT! - any machine"

We have a packaged version, MSDE didnt install when it was launched. So I installed the MSDE manually.

And it looks like the demo was removed from the package as well...

Tried to create a new DB, and it states...

"Could not create the specified database. Master was not found."

I can connect to other databases though, with no problem. Just not the one that was moved to this new machine....It was a refresh, so it had to go bye bye....

by: GLComputingPosted on 2007-05-25 at 15:21:20ID: 19160238

For some reason, the install failed to create the MSDE instance (this is Microsoft code that does this)

I'd try all the steps listed in http://itdomino.act.com/act.nsf/docid/14155

by: johnb6767Posted on 2007-05-25 at 15:21:57ID: 19160240

The other databases are on a SQL server, which is probably why the others work fine....

by: GLComputingPosted on 2007-05-25 at 15:25:35ID: 19160250

Are you running Workgroups or Standard?

8.0 Standard only uses MSDE
8.0 Permium (Workgps or Web) can use MSDE (if on a non-server OS) or SQL 2000 (if on W2000 Server or W2003 Server)

9.0 Retail - SQL 2005 Express
9.0 Premium Ex - SQL 2005 Express
9.0 Premium ST - SQL 2005 Standard

Only the Premium versions allow you to create your own ACT! instance

Looking at that link now...

johnb6767,

After reviewing this thread I believe your attempting to install ACT! 2006 on a new server.  In that case you need CD2 which contains the proprietary instance of MS SQL (it's SQL 2000).

On a clean install of ACT! on a server you'd be prompted for CD2 during the first part of the install - that installs the MSSQL$ACT7.  After that install it will prompt for CD1 to install the application.  DO NOT try to install these components manually - install through the CDs.  At this point you'd be better off installing all of the instances you tried installing manually.

Also, be aware that sometimes the SQL instance installed but doesn't start.  You can check services.msc and make sure it's running (started).

Once ACT! & the MSSQL$ACT7 instance are running on the new server a File, Backup from the old and then a File, Restore As on the new (through the ACT! application) should fix your problem.

Good luck

Steve

Actually Steve, he's installing on XP, so it will not use CD2 or SQL 2000

I think he also checked the services.msa and the MSDE instance isn't there.

GL,

I wasn't getting that from John's posts.  John can you verify the OS of the machine in question?

When you say "host" I assume you're moving ACT! from one server to another.  Is that correct?

GL,  Yes, I see that, the client is XP.  I'm asking John what OS the server is running.

John, is this a client/server network or peer to peer?

Sorry for the delay. Went hog hunting this weekend.....

This is the only database not on our SQL cluster, and was previously hosted on an XP Pro machine. It was moved to a new XP Pro machine, and this is where we are trying to get it to work.

I believe it must have to do with the packaged version we are using. It is NOT trying to install any MSDE versions during the install. Might not have any further info for a few days, but we are going to be trying to reinstall on the new "server" with the source....

Thanks for the information. Been very helpful to this point....Will update ASAP!!

We should see an update in the morning.

by: johnb6767Posted on 2007-05-30 at 07:22:41ID: 19180235

The app was reinstalled using a different source, and it installed everything properly. So, I think it is safe to say that the package we had did not incorporate everything from the full install.....Thanks for the help.
