Question

How to remove duplicates in act! contact activities?

Asked by: jabramsja

I have had tons of problems trying to sync act! 2008 with a treo 700wx.  Don't ask.  I finally found companionlink as a solution.  The problem I am having is that companionlink has an undocumented flaw with syncing to act! via direct mode in vista with Windows Mobile Device Center.  It stops responding after a period of time, or when switching from one sync to another (e.g. from contacts to activities) in act!.

My problem is this.  Now I have duplicate entries in the calender on the treo 700wx, as well as many duplicates in the act! database itself under contact activities (appointments)?

Basically, i don't know a whole lot about act!.  I just need a good way to get rid of these duplicates fast. Whether it be in calenders, contacts or activities.  As of right now, restoring from backup isn't an option.  Act! database has not been backed up in a while.  Due to problems with WMDC and the treo, I have not been able to back up the treo either.

Please help me.  I am desperate.  This has been a long journey with act!, and I really really want it to end.

Thanks for listening!
Jeff

These problems are why I prefer Handheld Contact... http://www.GLComputing.com.au/HHC

How many duplicates are you referring to? You might be able to open the Task List, highlight every second record and delete them

3 or 4 for every contact that has an activity for it.  I think it may be in the hundreds.  I wouldn't mind using your software, but it is just too expensive right now.  I appreciate your help just the same though.  I am very surprised there is no easy way to get rid of these duplicates.

Well, ACT! doesn't create duplicate activities... so I guess they didn't think it would be necessary. I guess it would make sence for a third-party developer like Companion Link to write a clean-up procedure that repairs something like this.... it would be not that difficult to do a search of activities with the same contact, date/time and regarding.

As to cost... the only people who say that are people who don't value their own time. Think how much time you've spent and how much that is worth to you :-)

I agree with you on the majority of your points.  However, Act! link should be expected to work.  They shouldn't market items that have undisclosed problems.  We wouldn't have even gotten act if we thought we had to add an expenditure for the pda link.  We would have used outlook with add-ons.

Now I know some people may say that act isn't the problem.  They may blame vista, or WMDC.  I say that act! is the smallest link in the chain.  In my own liitle brain, I think that act! could update their link software to recognize the new WMDC structure in Vista.  Either that or stop touting that they support the feature.

As for the statement that people who worry about cost don't value their time, I will just have to agree to disagree.

I also want to state that although I can and probably will end up using the software you referred me to, I just want a definitave reason why these things aren't working the way they are supposed to.

Again, I appreciate all of your replies.  I look forward to them.  I also wonder why there aren't too many others that respond to my question.

The ACT! link does work for a simple way of getting numbers onto a Windows Mobile device... I know some that use it (although none I know on Vista at this time).

Most people I know with ACT! and either Windows Mobile or Blackberry devices use HHC... including those at Sage. So maybe this explains the less people around here who have experience with the free link

jabramsja,

Most users and consultants I know use Companionlink or HHC to sync ACT! to a device.  As GL says, ACT! isn't expecting activities to duplicate so there is no easy way to remove them.  This is why it is VERY important to have backups of your database.

Others aren't replying because GL's posts are dead on.  Nothing else to say....
