Question

ACT Software Internet Sync change server IP address

Asked by: lew_stoner

My ISP has changed my static IP and now home users are unable to sync data through ACT Internet server sync.  Have a SBS2003 that has ACT 2007 V9 workgroup premium loaded.  Have IIS 6 setup and working.  My Sonicwall firewall is setup to allow port 80 to reach the server.  I can reach the webpage of the server using the new IP address.  I  can telnet to the IPaddress.  When clients try to sync they get a message "ACT is unable to connect to the sync server.  When I go to the Database - Sync Panel - Database - Sync Settings this lists the database name, database machine, etc.  it shows the old external IP address and not the new external IP address.  How or where do I change this?  All suggestions are greatly appreciated.  Thanks, Lew

Hi - made the above change to the remote database immediately after changing the server IP.  That is not the problem.  I believe the problem is the internet sync server within ACT is showing the wrong IP address.  When I go to the ACT database on the internet sync server - Sync Panel - Database - Sync Settings this lists the database name, database machine, etc.  it shows the old external IP address and not the new external IP address.  How or where do I change this?  All suggestions are greatly appreciated.  Thanks, Lew

Have you tried editing the SyncConfigFile.xml

   1.  Right-click the Windows Start button, and then click Explore form the shortcut menu.
   2. Browse to the ACT Internet Sync folder for ACT! (default location is C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\ACT\ACT for Windows 9\ACT Internet Sync\).
   3. Right-click SyncConfigFile.xml, and then click edit from the shortcut menu.. The file will open in Notepad.
   4. Make sure Database NAME="" is the name of your database (must be in ALL CAPS and include quotes). Do NOT include a file extension with the database name (.PAD, for example).
          * Hint: to determine your database name; click the Help menu, click About ACT!, and then click the Database Info button.
   5. Replace MACHINE="" with the name or IP address of your machine (must be in ALL CAPS and include the quotes.)
          * Hint: to determine your Machine name, right-click your My Computer icon, and then click Properties from the shortcut menu. Your Machine name will be displayed under the Network Identification tab (Windows 2000) or Computer Name tab (Windows XP).
   6. Once the file has been edited, click the File menu, and then click Save.
Caution: Do NOT click Save As. You must save this file with the same name and in the same location.
   7. Click the File menu, and then click Exit to close Notepad.

Hi - We have multiple databases each accessed by a different user.  An ACT "expert" set up the SyncConfigFile.xml file per below.  It has never worked through the internet sync.  I can get to the website from the internet.  When I put in my browser http://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:65100 I get the act.framework.sync........ reply.  So I am getting to the webserver and it is finding act info.  The D: drive is shared with everyone (not very secure, but until we get this resolved...then I will secure things).   The path is correct for the pad files.  Should I replace "SERVER" with "192.168.1.10" ? All suggestions are greatly appreciated.  Lew

Who was the ACT! "expert"?

" When I put in my browser http://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:65100 I get the act.framework.sync........ reply" - of course. Because your browser isn't trying to sync. Also, why would you do 65100? By default, Internet sync is on port 80.

Yes, I'd try using the IP address... it's usually better if your network isn't properly propagating WINS.
