Question

ACT 2009 v11 Backups Fail

Asked by: jy3sonet

Cannot backup ACT from within the Application on our server.  We currently have ACT version 11.0.0.367.
Each attempt that I try to make, I recieved the error message that I've uploaded (had to shade out part of the file name to protect the identity of our business name)
This is on a Windows Server 2003 R3 server, it is using the MS SQL Server 2005 with SP2
Oddly though, the ACT Scheduler service shows that the Backup tasks that I have completed successfully.

I have a branch office with the same setup, and it works fine.

If the Scheduler is successfully backing up the database, this implies a permissions based issue when you log into the system.

Try logging into the server as a local admin (not a domain admin) and then running the application backup.  If this is successfull then it proves there is a permissions problem  If this also gives the same error, look in the SQL Error logs in ActDiag to see if there is anything listed in there (http://kb.sagesoftwareonline.com/cgi-bin/sagesoftwareonline.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=14720).

My Server is also a domain controller, so I don't have any local accounts, only have one administrator account (the built-in one) other then a backup Admin account of course.

I did log into just ACT after your suggestion as a different user that has administrative privileges in ACT and on the network, and it appears to be working.  Will follow-up and let you know for sure.  How would I go about troubleshooting why the built-in domain administrator doesn't have priviledges to do so?

It's a difficult one as there could be so many reasons from a networking perspective including GPO's if they are being used.

What I would suggest as a first step is to set the security on the master folder of the database to ensure your admin account has full control, and to ensure that all sub-folders have inherited that permission.  What I usually do is add the troublesome account onto the security as a specific account rather than adding Domain Admins as there may be more restrictions to that account.

It did successfully backup with no errors using the alternate user account with administrative priviledges.  Thank you very much!  I thought this would of amounted to a whole lot more.
