Question

ACT for Web: Sync a second database

Asked by: PTSMN

I was wondering how to go about adding a second Database for syncing. We have our main DB syncing great, but I want to add a prospect database so we have all the sales prospects syncing back to our server as well.

I created the second DB through ACT on the server, copied out the remote DB. Unpacked and restored, but whren I try to sync I am getting the error that \\Server\DB is not found or available.

Can someone point me in the right direction? Maybe a KB that specifies how to do this properly? I'm new to ACT 4 Web and need someone to hold my hand...thanks!

I assume you're using Internet or Network sync server?

Have you set up the additional on the sync server software?

by: PTSMNPosted on 2009-10-02 at 09:13:33ID: 25479312

Well thats a good question...not sure how to find the Internet sync part of the program, but our other DB is syncing via the internet fine.

You can use Internet Sync or Network Sync server to sync via the internet

There are three methods to sync ACT! - Application sync, Network sync and Internet sync.

Application sync cannot be used to sync multiple databases from the same server

You might have a look at http://blog.glcomputing.com.au/2009/01/sharing-act-network-or-sync-part-1.html

So do I add the second DB to the SyncConfigFile.xml? This is where I am confused.

This article discusses setting a up a db but not not an additional second db.

by: GLComputingPosted on 2009-10-09 at 07:44:34ID: 25535523

No, you don't modify the xml file.

You still haven't said which method you're trying to sync with... the way to add the database will depend on the method for sync.

internet sync is how the other database is syncing as my users are in Colorado, canada and the bahamas and their databases sync perfect. (they are not using any VPN connections)

So, you are using ACT!'s Internet Sync service (on IIS)?
Network Sync can also be done over the internet

You've already posted this link...but thanks again.

So here are my revised questions...how do I add a second database to ACT through Internet sync? How do I open ACT Internet Sync for administration purposes?

Throw me a bone please.

by: GLComputingPosted on 2009-10-28 at 07:27:27ID: 25683563

it's different for Internet Sync (which uses the IIS server) as opposed to Network Sync (which can also be done on the internet with port forwarding)

You need to know which or you'll likely mess the sync and have to fully set it up from scratch again.

So you really MUST first work out which sync server you are using.

Its Internet sync

Network Sync isnt installed on my server. Will I need this in order to add the second database to the syncing services?

by: GLComputingPosted on 2009-11-10 at 08:16:42ID: 25786824

Without a sync server (Network or Internet), ACT! has to be open on the server and logged into the database to receive syncs - ACT! can only open one database at a time.

If that's how you're set up, you're using Application Sync... and this is usually not recommended on a web server

If users can sync without the server logged in to ACT! (or even Windows), then you must have a sync server. If that's the case, the sync server doesn't have to be on the ACT! server (although it usually is). If the remotes can sync without the server logged in, then see what IP they have in their sync settings to see the machine with the sync server

by: PTSMNPosted on 2009-11-16 at 12:39:19ID: 25833854

Yep...the IP points directly to my ACT server. No...My ACT doesnt need to be logged in for people to sync.

So do I need Network sync installed in ordcer to sync two DB's via Internet sync?

Anyone? Seems I keep getting links to other KB's that arent really clear on how to add a second DB?

Lets regroup...

-i need to figure out where to go to make my 2nd DB sync-able (also located on my svr 2003)
-I dont have Network sync installed
-I am using Internet Sync service (on IIS) for my one database (which syncs fine)
-all kb's posted so far do not mention anything about adding a SECOND database

by: GLComputingPosted on 2009-11-16 at 12:55:39ID: 25834014

If ACT! doesn't need to be logged in (on the server) for people to sync, then you DO have one of the sync servers installed.

You need to find which sync server, and on which machine

The KBs do talk about adding a 2nd database... BUT until you know which sync server you are using and have it opened, they won't make sense to you

by: PTSMNPosted on 2009-11-16 at 14:19:05ID: 25834850

I am using Internet Sync service (on IIS) for my one database (which syncs fine) I only have one server. No need to try and locate it.

The last article you posted is titled "How To Configure the ACT! by Sage Internet Sync Service to Use the ACT! Network Sync Service User Interface to Add and Remove Databases from the Sync Service"

...to which I asked if I'll need to install network sync in order to make this happen....(just verifying that I am not misreading)

by: GLComputingPosted on 2009-11-16 at 14:47:59ID: 25835145

No... this is the first time you've confirmed that you're using the Internet Sync server.

Have you tried adding additional lines to the SyncConfigFile.xml as per:
http://kb.sagesoftwareonline.com/cgi-bin/sagesoftwareonline.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=22978

by: PTSMNPosted on 2009-11-17 at 08:10:10ID: 25841061

I will try that and report back...thanks.

Have you had any luck?

by: PTSMNPosted on 2010-02-08 at 11:04:55ID: 26516785

nope...this didnt work either. We have since decided to just use the single database.

by: GLComputingPosted on 2010-02-14 at 22:34:12ID: 26569358

A single database is best... but if you still want to set up for multiple databases, let me know and I'll organise a remote session to look at your setup
