Question

Act 9 for Workgroups wont restore

Asked by: garethstevens25

We have recently upgraded are network to a SBS server 2008 Domain, including a Server 2008 SQL box.  We planned to backup the Act 2007 for workgroups database and restore As..  to the new domain on the Server 2008 SQL box.  We have around 10k contacts + significant number of attachments, + 2GB.

Using the backup option within Act appears to work (but takes between 4-6 hours, but produces a file reported between 40-80 MB which is clearly incorrect.  We then try to restore As.. on the new box but it states that the zip file does not contain a valid backup, or words to that effect.

When you examine the zip file it reports to have the correct files and size of files, + 2GB, but when you try to extract the file it terminates with an error stating that there was an unexpected end of file.

Your help would be much appreciated.

Two possibilities:

1. ACT! 20007 (9.0) doesn't support Windows 2008
2. 4-6 hours? That means something is wrong. How big is the ADF? What's the size if the Attachments folder?

by: garethstevens25Posted on 2009-10-13 at 03:59:54ID: 25558617

Hi, I have not tried to restore on the W2008 server yet, so not that.

The ADF is 700Mb and the attachments are 8GB

The limit of a ZIP file is 4GB
Later versions of the Backup allow you to backup without the attchments

You might try the BAT file for backups mentioned:

Thank you very much for this.  At least I know the reason why and I have been able to successfully restore to the new server, however I cannot get my client's to connect to the database in the new location.

I have shared out the location of the database and I can click on the .pad files from the client but then the client gives me a message 'could not find a database called <DATABASE NAME> on host <CLIENT WORKSTATION NAME>

Any ideas?

How did you copy the database?
If you did it via the BAT, the PAD file will still point to the old location

The PAD is just a Pointer to the ACT! Database - you can open it in Notepad to see what machine it points to.

If it's wrong, delete the PAD
In ACT! - File Open
Change File Type to ADF
Open the file and it will create a new PAD

I renames the attachements folder so they were not backed up and then backed up and restored within act.  We will bring the attachements over manually later.

Looked at the pad file, seemed fine but I tried put the mapped drive details in instead of the location on the server drive, but this did not work

<?xml version="1.0" standalone="no"?>
<!DOCTYPE ACTDatabasePADFile>
<!--This file represents a Pointer to an Act Database or [PAD]-->
<ACTDatabase name="ADSM" host="." location="\\Appserver\ACTDATASQL\ADSM.ADF" type="Sql" />

by: garethstevens25Posted on 2009-10-14 at 05:57:26ID: 25569898

Ok,

I have looked at the old pad and updated:

<?xml version="1.0" standalone="no"?>
<!DOCTYPE ACTDatabasePADFile>
<!--This file represents a Pointer to an Act Database or [PAD]-->
<ACTDatabase name="ADSM" host="APPSERVER" location="D:\ACTDATASQL\ADSM.ADF" type="Sql" />

This now lets me log in but then says it requires the supplemantal information, so I am restoring the attachments and see if that works.

You selected "Restore As" when doing the restore?

That PAD won't work
host should be the machine name or IP
location should be the physical location drive:\Path

Delete it and re-create as above

by: garethstevens25Posted on 2009-10-14 at 06:01:33ID: 25569936

Host is APPSERVER, I tried deleting the pad file and recreating it but when I selected the ADF option it stated that I do not have access, but I am local admin.

by: GLComputingPosted on 2009-10-14 at 06:28:20ID: 25570183

Exact error?

by: garethstevens25Posted on 2009-10-14 at 06:32:05ID: 25570224

Cannot find database supplemental files folder ADSM-database files in this location APPSERVER.  This could be a problem with the share, or the folder may not exist.  Please contact the administrator of your database

I am now restoring all folders under adsm database files, (Backup, Layouts, Queries, Reports & Templates)

When I went to restore it would seem that the files are already there from the backup.

Reading through the article it looks like sharing is not setup and when I login to the database, tools...database maintenance...share database  is grayed out, but I am logging in as a full administrator.......

Try these:
http://kb.sagesoftwareonline.com/cgi-bin/sagesoftwareonline.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=22815

http://kb.sagesoftwareonline.com/cgi-bin/sagesoftwareonline.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=19640

Remember that ACT! 2007 (9.0) isn't support to support Win 2008 (or Vista). While there is a workaround for ACT! 2007 standard on Vista, I've never seen ACT! 2007 Workgroups used on Vista... and the issues may be similar on Win 2008.

You might try this to see if it helps:
http://kb.sagesoftwareonline.com/cgi-bin/sagesoftwareonline.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=20431

But, best option would be an upgrade to ACT! 2010 which is supported.

Got it working!!

We had to share the database as described above and to get this grayed out option available we had to diable UAC.

Many many thanks for sticking with this and your assistance.
