Question

ACT (Premium for Web) Templates open in a blank window that just hangs.

Asked by: Razzmataz73

Hello,
We have had ACT!  Premium for Web (Version 8.0.2.42, 2006) running on our server for years.  Then starting yesterday afternoon whenever you go to:
Write-->Other Document (From Template)
Select a template and open it.
A blank white window opens and it just hangs, never loading the template.

These templates where working fine 2 days ago.
Thanks

Does it happen for all user and templates?
Does it happen on the server?

What web browser? There was an update rolled out by Microsoft for IE8 yesterday - maybe that has caused a problem?

by: Razzmataz73Posted on 2009-11-04 at 07:14:21ID: 25740114

It works on the server but not on the web.
It happens for all of our (web) users (and all of the templates), they are all using IE8.

by: GLComputingPosted on 2009-11-04 at 07:18:08ID: 25740153

Maybe try uninstalling the recent IE8 patch and see if that helps?

ACT! 2006 was written so long ago, it's possible new patches from MS might break it. Certainly a DST patch a while back broke this version also

by: Razzmataz73Posted on 2009-11-04 at 07:32:58ID: 25740309

Should I look for the patch on the server?
Or on the individual machines?

by: GLComputingPosted on 2009-11-04 at 07:48:54ID: 25740499

The individual machines... it's a patch to IE.

I can't think of anything else that might have changed in the past couple of days....

by: zpomoPosted on 2009-11-04 at 08:03:29ID: 25740672

Can we narrow it down a bit..
is it happening on all machines?
is it happening with all templates?
What are you using as your ACT word processor ?  (ACT or MS Word?)

I'd try to open up the ACT Demo database and see if the issue can be recreated there.

by: GLComputingPosted on 2009-11-04 at 08:06:21ID: 25740709

Zpomo -
Razzmataz73 already said it's all machines and templates
ACT! 2006 for Web couldn't use Word. This was only added to the Web version with ACT! 2010

I uninstalled KB976749 from my PC, did the required reboot, and tried to open a template, and it does the same hanging thing.

Also, it looks like it installed the KB976749 on my pc early this morning, there where no updates installed on my computer yesterday.

Is there something on the server I should check?

by: GLComputingPosted on 2009-11-04 at 09:41:06ID: 25741813

If you can access it from the server (in a web browser, not the full client), probably not.

Maybe look for any errors in the Windows Event Log on both server and client when it happens

Yes,
I just went onto our ACT server.
Opened IE and went to our ACT premium for web address and I was able to open the template with no problem.  Our ACT Server is WIndows 2003.

I tried it again on my pc (Vista and a work pc, XP) and it still won't work from those computers.

by: Razzmataz73Posted on 2009-11-04 at 10:55:16ID: 25742570

Write --> New document does the same thing (just opens a white window that hangs with the hour glass thinking) if that helps.

by: GLComputingPosted on 2009-11-04 at 10:55:54ID: 25742576

And anything in the event log on either machine when you tried from the Vista or XP PCs?

What browser version on the server?

by: Razzmataz73Posted on 2009-11-04 at 11:10:21ID: 25742736

I just went through the steps and checked all of the event logs and nothing was logged during the time of the test.
:(

Browser on server is IE8
Version:  8.0.6001.18702

Any other ideas?

by: Razzmataz73Posted on 2009-11-04 at 14:27:06ID: 25744725

I searched around where GLComputing: gave me the link to and found:
http://kb.sagesoftwareonline.com/cgi-bin/sagesoftwareonline.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=18297&p_created=1143846959&p_topview=1

I am trying that now.

by: Razzmataz73Posted on 2009-11-04 at 15:17:49ID: 25745190

No luck with the above link.

Can you make sure you have turned off any/all anti-virus and pop-up blockers

http://kb.sagesoftwareonline.com/cgi-bin/sagesoftwareonline.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=17533

by: Razzmataz73Posted on 2009-11-05 at 07:00:50ID: 25750134

I turned everything completly off and I get the same thing.
Write-->New document and I get this popup that stays with the thinking hour glass and never brings up the controls.

by: Razzmataz73Posted on 2009-11-05 at 07:13:15ID: 25750280

Is there something that needs to be done to the ACT server to get the ACT Word Processor to work?
It is not working for anyone on any machine (xp, vista) and it stopped working for everyone on the same day.  And for most people it stopped working before thier computer was rebooted to install the microsoft updates.(which we tried uninstalling and that still didn't fix the issue).

by: GLComputingPosted on 2009-11-05 at 07:38:02ID: 25750600

You said that it works on the server... therefore, it's not a server issue unless there's a firewall function.

Did you try the items in the last link I posted?

by: Razzmataz73Posted on 2009-11-05 at 07:45:24ID: 25750688

Yes,
I turned off any/all anti-virus and pop-up blockers, and no luck.
And I got to step #18 of the link
But when I get to the DLL section they aren't on my machine and when I go to ACT I get the same blank window and it doesn't ask me if I want to install anything.

I also tried turning all of my security settings within IE all the way down, still didn't work.
I just completly uninstalled IE 8 off of one of the machines and after the reboot will try it with IE7 to see if that works.

How can I verify if it is a firewall issue on the server?

by: Razzmataz73Posted on 2009-11-05 at 07:51:25ID: 25750752

tried it with IE7.
Didn't work.
:(

Is there somewhere I can manually ad the addin TX - ButtonBar Control?
That might be causing the issue

by: GLComputingPosted on 2009-11-05 at 08:05:29ID: 25750890

I can't remember if ACT! 2006 used the TX controls... if so, they are made by these guys:
http://www.theimagingsourceforums.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1

But usually you'd get an error if they can load (at least when I've seen them fail).... maybe have a look at the event logs on the server to see what was installed or updated when the error started.

by: Razzmataz73Posted on 2009-11-05 at 08:17:26ID: 25751012

Good idea!
We looked at the error log on the machines but not the server.

I am in there now, is there something in particular I should be looking for?

by: Razzmataz73Posted on 2009-11-05 at 08:21:41ID: 25751049

Is there another ACT on the web somewhere that I can access to see if it works that way?

by: Razzmataz73Posted on 2009-11-05 at 08:36:48ID: 25751208

I just tried to Write-->New document from a computer that has never accessed ACT on the web before.
And it gives a little more info.
It never downloads the control, and the little green loading bar at the bottom only goes to 1 bar and says that it is waiting, and that is as far as it gets.

Does that help?

I haven't heard anything in a couple of days.
Does anyone have any other suggestions?
Or should I post this in another area?

by: Razzmataz73Posted on 2009-11-09 at 09:23:21ID: 25777956

New info.
I just logged into the server and opened the ACT8Demo database and tried to write a document from there and got "The RPC server is unavailable", and then "Exception of type System.OutOfMemoryException was thrown".  I ok'd out of them and the ACT word processor came up.  Could that be related to the issues we are having when trying to open the ACT! Word Processor through IE?

by: Razzmataz73Posted on 2009-11-11 at 06:19:10ID: 31649987

It was update related.  We have a dedicated server with Godaddy but can only do a restart remotly.  I had them turn the computer completly off (whch it looks like some of the updates neeeded), and then turned back on.  And poof!  It now works.
:)

Thank you for all of your help.
