Question

Moving Goldmine 7 to new server

Asked by: Medrx

We are running Goldmine 7.00.60526  on SBS 2003 (SP1) with SQL2000.  We have 10 local users plus 4 Remote users.  We would like to move goldmine to a new server which is running Server 2003 R2 with SQL2000 already installed and joined to our domain.

Can anyone provide information on how this should be done so that there is minimal impact on the end users?  We need to have Goldmine moved and also the sync sites to work properly along with all the linked files to each contact.

Do you *just* want to move the database? Or the complete GoldMine installation? Assuming the latter...

In summary:

Just backup your database on your current server and restore it to your new server. Install GoldMine on your new server. Copy the subdirectories under GoldMine from your old server to your new server. This will include critical directories for sync and mailbox attachments, templates, reports, etc.

Edit the gm.ini file in your root GoldMine folder so that the sysdir entry points to the new location.

Have your local users test GoldMine; disable access to your old GoldMine (just to be sure your local users are not seeing it).

Are you also moving the sync engine to the new machine? Assuming that you are, you'll need to configure it in the GoldSync Admin Center. You also would need to reconfigure your router if your remote users come in via the internet on a public IP address.

On each of the 4 remotes you'd want to change the ip address their sync profile is pointing to. If the remotes us a fully qualified host name (as opposed to an ip address) you can simply change your dns routing for that alias, and not have to touch the 4 remotes at all.

Again, this is just a general summary. There's too much variability from one system to the next to nail it down completely. This is because GoldMine provides flexibility, and a lot of different possibilities for configuration.

If you decide to hire this out, you can expect to pay for about half a day's work.

By the way, if users take advantage of GoldMine's feature for linking documents you may have an issue relative to the location of those documents. There are tools for mass changing the links but be sure you've got a good backup before you go down that path!

Good luck,
Steven

Steven, I forgot to mention that we also use GISMO to link e-mails to clients.  Will GISMO have to be re-installed on the client side?

When talking about the feature for linking documents, are you talking about the "Links" tab and anything that appears there or something else? If that is the case, if we were to keep the same path on the new server to the goldmine folder then there shouldn't be any problems with the linked files?  Right now goldmine is using L drive which is mapped to all clients as the goldmine folder.

Most likely not. Not reinstalled... just go to Tools | Options | GoldMine LInk and reset the path as needed. (It may be pointing to a local drive or, most likely, to your network drive.

Its been a while, but we finally moved goldmine to the new server. So far everything looks ok, i still have to test sync with remotes though.

As you mentioned in your first reply, we now have a different path to the linked files. Can you suggest the programs that can change the path for this?

Also, what is the difference between the folder Goldmine\Mailbox and Goldmine\TmpLinks ?

by: stevengraffPosted on 2008-09-05 at 08:51:49ID: 22400312

We use Link Mover from www.prior-analytics.com.

GoldMine\Mailbox is where you might specify storage for email attachments. GoldMine\TmpLinks is a default location GoldMine uses for synchronized documents whose original path on the remote doesn't exist on the server (or vice-versa).

I can't find anything about the Link Mover at the website you provided......

Got another issue, this time with GoldSync.  I have it installed as a service on the new server. Its setup to use the default port of 5993.  Unfortunately GoldSync is not listening on port 5993 even though the service is started.

I have tried to telnet to this server on 5993 and no dice.  I ran netstat on the server and nothing is listening on port 5993.  Do you have any suggestions on how to get GoldSync to listen on this port?

by: stevengraffPosted on 2008-09-05 at 11:43:20ID: 22402264

I wouldn't run GoldSync as a service... run it as an application instead. It's very hard to tell what's going on with a program when it's run as a service. More than likely, though, you'll just need to reconfigure the sync server module within the Sync Administrator module. It's almost certainly still pointing at the old machine name.

You may need to poke around a little to find the link mover utility. That is the right place though.

You were right, the sync was still pointing at the old server. I just created a new server and everything  is working ok.

I do have one more question. Its about Sync settings, on the server side and the remote side. See attached picture on what i'm talking about.
I have Goldmine mapped to L:\Goldmine on the network.  This drive is mapped to all users on the domain.
What should the settings be for the sync.  When browsing through the contacts under the "Links" tab i see some files that have a path to c:\program files\goldmine\mailbox\attach, some to l:\goldmine\mailbox\attach, and some to our old server using a UNC path \\servername\sharename\goldmine\mailbox\attach.

Should all these be changed to the new location, that being L:\Goldmine\mailbox\attach using the Link Mover tool? and how do i make sure that all new entries always go to the new location, especially the remotes?
