Question
Can't VPN using Vista Home Premium but can wiih Windows XP
I am attempting to VPN from home into the office with my new Sony Vaio laptop running Windows 64-bit, Vista Home Premium. For years, have been VPNing into the office with my Dell desktop computer running Windows XP with absolutely no problems. My laptop and desktop VPN settings are identical and are using the same router.
When attempting to connect with my laptop, I get error message 800 that a connection can not be made. I have attempted in both wired and wireless mode. I have turned off the Windows Firewall and anti-virus software software (Avira and Spybot). Even though I have nothing configured in the Belkin router for port blocking or forwarding, etc. (and the XP machine works fine) I swapped out the router (with a Linksys) and while again, the XP machine can VPN, the Vista machine can not. I am able to ping the Windows server from the laptop.
I brought my laptop to work and the network consultant (from a local company that provides network support) attempted to access the vpn internally with no success, even after 45 minutes of tinkering). Note: Nobody else uses Visa in the office, but everyone who does, uses XP and is able to access the vpn both externally AND internally.
The consultant also attempted accessing another external vpn (his employer's) with my laptop with no success. He tells me there that the server setup is extremely simple and there is nothing in my settings (or on the server) that should prevent access.
The server is a Windows Server 2003, Standard Edition, running PPTP/MSChapV2 (this is checked off in the Administrative Tools section - I checked myself!) and no ports relevant to remote access are being blocked (which makes sense, as my XP machine can access no problem).
I have seen a few papers on this board that show how to setup a VPN client and they essentially replicate what I've already attempted, with no success.
Does anyone have any ideas? This has been so frustrating - I've been wrestling with this for days looking for a solution.
Also, are there any public VPN test sites for client machines to log into to test configurations?

I finally figured this out - even though I had Window Firewall turned off - it turns out that Vista One Care blocks VPN access. If I disable this though services.msc, I can login to the VPN (even with Windows Firewall on). This has been so frustrating - You would think something that would come up that would say "Umm, hello! Windows Vista One Care is blocking you from accessing your VPN, here is how to correct it!"
