Question

update Goldmine using MS Access

Asked by: PlumInternet

Hello,

We have data contained within many MSQL dbases. We would like to push and pull data to and from goldmine and mysql.

We have looked at goldbox however we need to do some data manipulation, ie lookup tables, automated logic etc in between goldmine and Mysql. We can link to both the mysql and goldmine tables within access and source the data, but is it possible to update the goldmine tables in this manner ?

Although GoldBox is a great tool, it requires you to convert the data into dBase files before importing or integrating with GoldMine.

Another tool, Inaport by Inaplex, allows you to talk to the SQL database natively and bring the data into GoldMine. This is an excellent tool and is also sync aware in updating the GoldMine data.

Hi Plum,

If you have linked the SQL tables from Goldmine, then you can easily build an update query  in Access to update Goldmine.  Let me know if you have any questions on this

Also, what version of Goldmine are you running?

is it possible to update the goldmine tables in this manner ?

Pluminternet,

Possible? Yes. Supported? Absolutely not. Should you do it? depends...

If you promise and swear that you will never want to synhronize your data with a "remote" copy of GoldMine (an a notebook, for example) or with Outlook, or with a PDA... then sure, go ahead, your updates will work fine for you. Here's why the big caveat: when you update GoldMine data through the UI, GoldMine, in the background, also performs updates of it's synchronization log tables. These tables track which data was updated, and when, so that synchronization can perform efficiently, and incrementally. When you do your updates through the back end (i.e. SQL, Access, etc.) GoldMine has no awareness that you made those changes and, hence, is incapable of synchronizing them to other databases (PDAs, Outlook, other copies of GoldMine, etc.).

So, caveat emptor! Proceed with caution. You can do it, but be aware of the repercussions.

Both GoldBox and Inaplex maintain synch awareness, and are excellent data manipulation tools that have stood the test of time.

Good luck to you,
Steven

You can always find the SQL stored procs for creating TLOG entries and valid RECID's but then you are making life very complicated.

You can write you own update applications using the GoldMine API which is sync aware.
