Hi,

Firstly do you just need to migrate the SQL Database to a new server or do you need to migrate the application also?

by: stevengraffPosted on 2009-09-30 at 10:32:10ID: 25461211

To move your db:

1. Backup your GoldMine database using SQL native backup tools.
2. Restore the db from #1 to the new server.
3. To get GoldMine to "point" to it, you'll need to edit your alias using GoldMine's alias editor: Tools | Databases | Alias manager.

The rest should be self evident.

If you're also moving the application itself, just try doing a copy/paste from one server to the other. If that doesn't work, you can re-install over the new location, probably doing a "repair" operation.

by: GMGeniusPosted on 2009-09-30 at 10:36:22ID: 25461256

I would actually suggest - installing goldmine on the new server before you copy and paste over the install folder

Also make note you will have to alter the dbalias.ini file to point to the correct server for SQL or you will have the situation where the application runs from the new server but will connect to your old SQL server for the database.

Hi,

I need to migrate the whole application and sql server.
The current server is going to be rebuilt.

When moving the SQL database, do I need to keep the backup and restore paths the same or has this been solved in 2005.

by: GMGeniusPosted on 2009-10-01 at 03:02:15ID: 25467170

No, not really, you just need to create the same databae(s) names and restore a backup from the other server.

> Copy the goldmine folder from the old server to the new server.
> open the dbaliase.ini file in notepad and alter the HOST entrie(s) to point to the new server.

> Launch GoldMine and you will have to provide the SQL login details (clicking save does not work)
> Goto tools>databases > Alias Manager , reset the password to the new password (even if the password was the same it is encrypted in the dbalias.ini to the HOST name also if the HOST changes the encrypted password will be invalid)

All should be fine

by: BenthamLtdPosted on 2009-10-01 at 03:43:27ID: 25467333

So,

1. Install Goldmine on new server
2. Install SQL Server 2005, restore backup
3. Copy Goldmine folder from Live server to new server, How can I determine the root Goldmine folder?
4. Change dbaliase.ini
5. Alias Manager , reset the password

Have I missed anything?

Hi,

I better way actually would be to do the following

Find the original install path by opening a working GoldMine and select Help> About then click System. Look for the EXE path (just copy the whole thing and paste here maybe)

1. Install SQL Server 2005 (using the Disks provided with GoldMine) first.
2. Install GoldMine and get it to create a new Database (same name as original) on the SQL server.
3. After install it will ask for License information, just cancel

4. You have a choice next either

Copy the complete GoldMine folder from the old server over the top of the new server. and then change the dbalias.ini as suggested

or

if there are no other databases leave the dbalias.ini alone and dont copy from the original server.

Most setups you should have a mapped drive letter to the goldmine folder so you will need to remap this to the new server and also if you have local installs on the client PC's you will need to check their local dbalias.ini files and adjust accordingly (or copy from the new server folder)

If you are running as a shortcut to the mapped drive then nothing more is needed. Note: a full local install is the recommended route these days.

I hope this is clear

Hi,

Sorry missed something

After point 2

2.5. Restore the SQL Backup from the old server over the top of the new blank database you created on the new server during step 2

Here's the System Info from within Goldmine

by: BenthamLtdPosted on 2009-10-01 at 14:00:33ID: 25473190

It looks to me like Goldmine has been installed on the G:\ Drive of the server.

I think all clients have the G:\ Drive mapped as a network drive as well, shared from the "apps" folder.

Does Goldmine run via mapped drives or is that just needed for the client install.
And how do you do a client install?
They also use SAGE and Quoteworks

by: GMGeniusPosted on 2009-10-01 at 15:06:52ID: 25473619

Hi,

Ok this helps alot.

I can see GoldMine is using the dbalias.ini entry "GoldMine" and its an 8 user system.

The old server has a mapped drive letter to itself, so the Application is most likely on the C or D drive and that location is shared.

It is good practice to use the same drive letter on the server when running the application as goldmine will store the full path to attached files and so you would need the same path for all users.

You should be able to tell the actual mapping by looking in the mappings list which can be found by right clicking on the "My Computer" icon and select "Manage"

See screen shot

All clients should really have the same mapping for consistancy.

As for a client install, if you are running GoldMine on the client machines as a shotcut to g:\apps\goldmine\gmw.exe then it would be fine to carry on.

But if you do wish to perform a full client install (this speeds up the load time for Goldmine)

Quickest way is to copy the gmsetup.exe to "g:\apps\goldmine\setup\goldmine", login in to GoldMine on the client PC via launching the "gmw.exe" from the G:\ location and using the master login.

Then you can go to "Tools>Configure>License Manager" and you will see an "Install Locally" tab.

If you cannot run GoldMine this way, just run the gm installer and follow the on screen prompts about the location of the server etc.

As for Sage and Quotewerks

I dont know about sage but Quotewerks is even easier.

I will assume Quotewerks is the SQL version?

Just copy the Quotewerks folder to the same location on the new server (as with GoldMine)

locate and edit the backend.ini file in the quotewerks folder

It should look similar to

[Backend]
SQL=-1
SQLServerName=win2k3\sql2005
SQLUserID=sa
SQLPassword=4372597054323aCC-331C554B163
SQLDatabaseName=QuoteWerks
SQLDatabaseOwner=dbo

Just modify the ServerName= section then if I remember correctly just run "nsetup.exe" on the server and each workstation (after mapping the drive letter to the new server of course)

I hope this helps, I have recently performed a server migration for a customer  and as a GoldMine pro its fairly straightforward, problem is , its easy when you are doing it, trying to recall everything from memory can be tricky.

Regards.

I think when GM was installed, the admin at the time renamed the drive to the G:\ drive.

They then installed GM to the G drive and then mapped the G drive on all the clients.

Would I be better off installing GM on the server via a mapped drive of G:\ mapped back to itself on a share of the D drive as so long as I ensure the path stays the same. e.g G:\apps\goldmine.

Hi,

Yes that would work fine.

Ensure when you share the folder you make sure all users have full access rights

Hi,

I've just realised that the old server is running SQL Server 2005 Standard and the new server is running Workgroup.
Is this going to cause issues?
Should I uninstall Workgroup and install standard?

I'm just about to restore the backup and copy over the GoldMine files.

by: GMGeniusPosted on 2009-10-05 at 05:11:04ID: 25494406

Hi,

You have to uninstall and install the SQL version from the disc that came with your Premium software pack.

This install is pre-licensed and the CAL's are then controlled by GoldMines Licenses, otherwise you will require CAL licenses for SQL seperately

You can also look here to compare the features

http://www.microsoft.com/Sqlserver/2005/en/us/compare-features.aspx

Regards

by: BenthamLtdPosted on 2009-10-05 at 05:39:09ID: 25494590

Hi,

On the new server I used the GM disks and that installed the Workgroup version.
The current server has a SQL standard install which was purchased through the MAPS licencing.

by: GMGeniusPosted on 2009-10-05 at 05:48:23ID: 25494663

Hi,

The workgroup edition is the correct one that is supplied with GoldMine, it manages its own CALs so you dont need to purchase anymore.

However GoldMine will work fine on either. IF you want the Standard version then you will need to deal with CALs separetly.

by: BenthamLtdPosted on 2009-10-05 at 05:57:38ID: 25494722

Hi,

But to move from Standard to Workgroup provided by GM should be fine.
There are no other SQL databases currently on the SQL server.

I have just restored a backup from last night, followed all the steps above and it seems to work.

Just need to sort Sage.

by: BenthamLtdPosted on 2009-10-11 at 03:21:28ID: 31635344

Worked like a charm.
