Question

unable to restore ACT!2007 database file onto a new computer

Asked by: speedyskis

OBJECTIVE:  Restore an Act!2007 database onto a different computer.

Hardware/software:
OLD- Dell PC with Win XP home edition and Act! 2007 for Workgroups.
NEW- Macbook with Bootcamp/ Win XP Pro

I created a database backup on the Dell backup and restore to another computer and put the file on my FTP. I did not select password protect. (The DB does have a password to open it.)
I installed ACT! 2007 from original disks on the new laptop. I can create a new DB and program works fine. I select restore DB and get this error:

System.NullReferenceException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object at C1.C1zip.C1ZipFile.Open(stringFileName) at Act.UI.DatabaseMaintenanceDialogs.RestoreDialog.ValidatePassword()

I read about some instance errors elsewhere, but have not seen a workable solution.

Are you sure the two systems have the same exact version of ACT!?
See - http://itdomino.act.com/act.nsf/docid/14596

by: speedyskisPosted on 2007-06-20 at 15:15:43ID: 19328806

I'm using the same licensed software disks- registered it to the new computer on install.

by: GLComputingPosted on 2007-06-20 at 15:19:16ID: 19328837

Are they the same build?
IE did you apply and updates/patches to either of them and not the other?

by: speedyskisPosted on 2007-06-20 at 15:27:01ID: 19328963

I updated the new one on install. I double checked and there are no new updates for the
Dell so , yes, same build.

by: GLComputingPosted on 2007-06-20 at 15:38:00ID: 19329012

You should check Help | About, rather than just checking to see if it can see updates.

If they are the same version, you might try:
1. Creating the Backup and making sure you can restore it on the DELL (again using Restore As)
2. If that works, then try it on the MAC

Let us know the results

OK- I ran checks again and there was an update on new. They are almost same now:
ACT! by Sage Premium for Workgroups 2007 (9.0) (EX Edition) Version 9.0.1.162, Hotfix 1, on new;
ACT! by Sage Premium for Workgroups 2007 (9.0) (EX Edition) Version 9.0.1.162 on Dell- does not have the hotfix, but when I try to update it says none are available.
I backed up the DB again and to RESTORE AS. It went further before erroring out.:restore detected error on page ,....(10496:150995273) in database "macbook07" (that's the new DB name) as read from the backup set. Restore database is teriminating abnormally.
PRC_MAINT_RESTOREDB:ERROR EXECUTING DATABASE RESTORE STATEMENT ---> Ssytem.Data.SqlClient.SqlException:RESTORE detected an error on page...
Its about 30 lines long and I have a screen capture of it.

by: speedyskisPosted on 2007-06-21 at 09:21:48ID: 19334598

I successfully restored AS on the Dell, so issue is only macbook. note- using Win XP home on Dell and Win XP Pro on macbook. There are no issues with other windows programs on macbook

Did you try a restore as on the same machine first to determine the backup worked? Or is this from that machine?

Maybe try the suggestions here - http://itdomino.act.com/act.nsf/docid/14729

Hotfixes do not roll out from the auto updater... it shouldn't effect this issue (but worth trying). It's available here - http://itdomino.act.com/act.nsf/docid/20517

MACBOOK- I created a new folder and tried to restore to that. same error
backed up a new database and restored to same folder, no problem. So problem is definitely something from 1 unit to other.
I have to break for a few hours. Will try the hotfix and all that.

Did the SQL permissions come out ok?

Can you also try backing up the Demo database on the Mac and doing a restore as on both machines?

How did you go?

by: speedyskisPosted on 2007-07-23 at 06:21:55ID: 19547072

I have not been able to resolve. Fortunately I was able to hook up the old computer for a couple of weeks--- but in a few days, I'll be SOL again.

Ok... you can create and use database in ACT! on the MAC?

How about trying this:
Stop the SQL services on the DEL - Start | Reun - stop SQL Server (ACT7)
Then copy the Database folder (and all sub folders) onto the MAC
Delete the PAD file (databasename.pad)
Open the ADF (databasename.pad)
Close ACT!
Copy the new PAD file from the database are to My Doc
Open ACT!
File | Open - select the PAD

If that works, the problem is with the restore code on a MAC

You may need to find another way to backup the database in case something happens, but it may work for you

Pls let me know

by: speedyskisPosted on 2007-07-23 at 10:36:52ID: 19549573

you lost me on: Stop the SQL services on the DEL - Start | Reun - stop SQL Server (ACT7)
Am I supposed to reboot the PC and press DEL button?

FYI- I did a demo backup on mac, and tried to restore to PC.  RESTORE detected an error on page 3075:1399 in databaase as read from the backup set. database terminating abnormally. it's about 50 lines long for the error info, but that's the main point.

I also don't have act 7. my version is premium for workgroups 2007 (9.0) v 9.0.1

by: GLComputingPosted on 2007-07-23 at 11:01:01ID: 19549781

Sorry - on the "DELL" - Click Start | Run | type "Services.msc"
Find "SQL Server (ACT7)"
Right Click and Stop
You need to do this before you can copy the files as the SQL engine locks them even if ACT! isn't running

The service is still called ACT7 in the versions since

by: speedyskisPosted on 2007-07-23 at 11:32:58ID: 19550088

OK- I get it and am working on it. will write back in a couple hours after running all steps.

by: speedyskisPosted on 2007-07-30 at 05:59:22ID: 19592052

I put all the files on my FTP server, however when I went to download them, the folders are all blank. I don't have access to the other PC now to try again...maybe later today I can go back to other location.

by: GLComputingPosted on 2007-07-30 at 06:14:01ID: 19592138

Ok... well, thet doesn't look like an ACT! issues, but with the way you are FTPing the data.
Let me know how it goes.

by: speedyskisPosted on 2007-08-01 at 09:07:43ID: 19610155

I'm working it- I keep getting error..",,,database already exists" when I go to open ADF file.

by: speedyskisPosted on 2007-08-01 at 12:21:45ID: 19612000

OK- I have it working, but not the way you said. (open & close ACT several times to get this to work)
I copied the DB file folder over
deleted pad file
opened adf file (won't open by click, have to use ACT, Open)
then it says, sorry already DB file by that name. tries to update DB anyway & fails
Changed the 2 file names by adding a 1
updates the file, and asks for user/pass
now opens DB
clicked around, but when I clicked on Documents folder, It though  it crashed program, but 5 min later it opened the folder and you can see file names, 0 bytes, probably because path to folder may not be same.

Thank you for your assistance. Any last tips about this or going back to other computer before I close out problem are appreciated.

I'll update this problem when I roll back to the other computer in 2 weeks when I return.

Obviously the MAC bootcamp XP is not the same as a normal XP in some areas.

I would guess that, unlike your other Windows programs, ACT! is using more Microsoft technologies (.Net framework, SQL, etc)... and if these are not properly handled in the Windows system, the types of errors you've been having may continue and may get worse.

I would make absolutely sure you have a good backup procedure (not using the one in ACT! as this is an area that seems problematic for you). You could try AutoAdmin III or something similar - http://www.glcomputing.com.au/main/47/1

by: speedyskisPosted on 2007-08-03 at 06:12:11ID: 19624518

actually, bootcamp allows Windows XP to run NATIVELY on the Mac. I think the difference with issues is that  one is XP Pro and one is XP  home

by: GLComputingPosted on 2007-08-03 at 06:18:58ID: 19624569

XP Home limits concurrent users (when used as a server) to 5. It shouldn't make a difference to the Restore functions.
