How to send sms from java application ?

Can some one let me know how to send sms from java application ? Is there is any sample code available ? Does sending sms cost ? Is there is any free sms server ?

You need an sms gateway
"Some Home Automation systems have the ability to accept SMS messages from the users' mobile phones to control lighting and other appliances[citation needed]. The system may send an SMS confirmation when the requested action has been performed or send alerts via SMS[citation needed]. These systems would require a connected mobile phone or access to a gateway."

I believe you can send sms via email and it does not cost anything. It might cost the receiver depending on the network they are on. You send an email to the person based on the provider. So if they are on Telus it would be number@msg.telus.com. You might have to play around with the provider address. At the wiki link I provided there is a table of providers, but it does not match 100%. My provider's email was listed as @txt.bell.ca, but it is actually @txt.bellmobility.ca.
I haven't written a Java app for this, basically it would just send an email. I don't know if it would be much slower that sms. When I tested from my gmail account to my phone the delivery time was comparable to sms, but I did not test this significantly.

The downside to this approach is that the sender has to know the receivers provider and proper email for sms.
