I know the Great Circle Distance formula can be used to find distance between two points. What I would like to do is calculate, given one point (longitude, latitude), a distance, and a direction, the resulting point (longitude, latitude).
For example, I have the longitude and latitude of New York and I would like to know what is the longitude and latitude of a point at 100 miles east of it.

I wrote a poor mans INS program for the Sharp PC1500/PC1600/PC1251 in Sharp Basic, which does just that. You can enter point from a pre-loaded database of Lat/Long Co-ords, or if you fail to do that it ask the question What is the Lat/Long/Varn. of the point and it works out a Flight Plan or just the track and distance & ETA between the points.
ie Departure Point AMML (Melbourne Australia)
Next WAypt AMLT (Launceston)
Works out Mag Track & Distance.
Other feature is a Fix...
Enter you DME Distance and Radial from a known Station and it advises your Lat/Long. If you do not know the distance it assumes you are using an NDB and asks for another bearing from a known station, and does the same. The gives your track and distance to another known waypoint. There are a lot of other features, and you are welcome to the code including the basic formulae and Australian waypoint data. Sharp Basic is very fast because it has the ability to restore data at a particular waypoint without searching the entire database. (By Restore A$ when A$ is the Waypoint variable name.) By 100 miles east of it do you mean a point at the same latitude as New York?
If so, do you mean 100 miles along the latitude line?
or a point who's great circle distance from New York is 100 miles?
