Question

Plot route on map from GPS coordinates

Asked by: mvidas

Hi everyone,

I'm going to be taking a trip (only around contiguous US) in a few weeks, and I bought an Delorme Earthmate GPS (model LT-20 if it matters).  It came with Street Atlas USA 2005 for mapping software, and that is what I'll be using to navigate my way around if/when I get lost.  I'll have the GPS device attached to my laptop in my car.

What I'd like to do is plot where I've been on a map, and to be able to save that map as an image file for others to see the route I've taken thus far via my website.  I don't need it to connect the dots, so to speak, just simply to be able to place a dot on a map for each set of coordinates.

I know what I have to do to get the raw GPS coordinates from the device using VB, so that isn't an issue, but I'm wondering what suggestions any of you may have for a way to plot my route.  After some searching, I found ArcView (http://www.esri.com/software/arcview/) but that does much more than I'm looking for, and theres no way I'm spending $1200 on this.  Freeware/opensource would of course be preferred, but I am a realist and will probably have to spend a little to accomplish this.

Does anyone have any experience doing this? I haven't really looked into the Street Atlas 2005 enough to know if it could do it, so if someone could even confirm something like "Yes, SA2005 can easily do this, you just need to do _____" or "Yes it can, go here _____ for more details" that would be great.  Otherwise I'm hoping someone can point me to a way to do what I need.

I don't need anything fancy here, in fact I'd prefer it to just be a relatively simple map of the US.  I don't even need roads to be on the map, but I'd like state boundaries to at least be on it (though I can live with it otherwise).

Any ideas/suggestions are welcome!  I've done much searching both on google and on here, so I'm hoping someone with experience can help or even just "I've suggested this for previous questions, and it seems to have worked for them"

Thanks!
Matt

Thanks flow, that may do but I recently thought of the strain it may put on the webserver (both in processing time and downloaded amount).
I sent the company an email asking for specific information, and I'll download the trial version tonight to see how well it works for me (my trip is only going to be 23 days so if the program does what I need without consuming too many resources then I'll use the evaluation version -- $400 is too much for me to spend for something I don't need after the trip).

I thought about getting a good map of the US and manually plotting based on x,y points (conversion from the lat/long from GPS based on the lat/long boundaries of the image), but getting a map of what I want that clearly identifies the lat/long of the borders is seeming to be a bit difficult.  I'm going to post a question in Miscellaneous asking for the expert google searchers out there to find me a map of what I need, if you think you may be able to help with that too then take a look for my question in a couple minutes!
I'm only doing this as it may be my best option, though I'd prefer to do it using something like what you suggested.  Just using it as a backup plan in case my original way doesn't pan out.

sounds good Matt, glad I was able to find something that may help.  The main reason I posted it was cause it looked useful, and especially had a FREE evaluation version (i love those).

Good luck on your trip and project!

I use Fugawi (http://www.fugawi.com) for this kind of requirement. It comes with maps. Costs 100$. The evaluation version can be downloaded but doesn't have maps.

You might want to try GPSS (http://www.gpss.co.uk/) - it's free and includes some maps. I didn't like the user interface too much, but the price is certainly right.

In addition, there' PhotoMaps (http://jdmcox.com/) which will track your position on Microsoft Map maps and GeoVisu (http://geovisu.free.fr/geovisu/english/index.htm) which doesn't have maps. On the commercial side, you also could try Microsoft AutoRoute (~$70). It has good maps and includes a simple navigation system. There are many more. To find a US version, you could try to buy one on eBay; it doesn't really matter if the map is a few years old.

Hi J,
That Fugawi program looks like it does the same thing my Street Atlas 2005 does (which in all honesty may be able to plot a route based on GPS coordinates of where I've been - I haven't tried that yet).  But the Fugawi doesn't say anything either about reading the GPS coordinates from a database and plotting only where you've been (not just where you currently are).

flow,
I got an email back about aspmap, seems like that will do exactly as I need! I'm not gonna pay for it, but I'll try it out starting July 6th, so my 40 day free trial will cover my trip plus some extra time, and I'll have a couple days to prepare/practice using it.  Thanks again!

I'm sure I'll have fun with it :)  it'll be on hastalavidas dot com, I'll be leaving really early on the 16th.  Right now I just have my tentative route on there

Thanks again
