Question

Resetting SYSDBA password.

Asked by: manojoswal

Hey Everyone,

I am running a Linux server and using InterBase 6.0. I've lost my SYSDBA password and I can use some help about how to reset the same. Is there any tool or command as such to reset the SYSDBA password so that I can get in and check the databases?

Any suggestions?

Thanks in Advance

On a new machine, install interbase.

Make a copy of the isc4.gdb security database in the interbase directory.

Place onto the database server in the same location.

Similarly, you may take a copy from a known machine.

YOU WILL LOSE ALL OTHER LOGINS ASWELL.  SO MAKE A COPY BEFORE YOU OVERWRITE IT.

Make sure that no-one is logged into either machine before performing these copies.

This process assumes that you have direct control of the database server.

Just to make sure I don't take any heat for the answer.  The isc4.gdb is set as read/write only be root, or by the system account of the Ib install.

The solution will only work for user root., and he has the ability to delete, cat, grep the datbase files anyway.

So there is no secret exposed here.  user root could have scanned through the database looking for data anyway, Hell.. he could have shutdown the machine and carted it away.

Part of the answer: make sure that you set the newly copied isc4.gdb with the same access rights the old version had.

I still remain

Seems every comment just adds details to previous one :-)
I'll next, ok ?

Personally i do not recommend installing new ISC4.gdb (or analogue file. it is called security.fdb on firebird and admin.ib on Interbase7) - just because one will loose passwords.

assuming You have all required right for the file copying:
1. shutdown IB process (it is ether single process for SuperServer or lock manager + number of client processes for ClassicServer version).

2. copy old ISC4.GDB to, say trouble_ISC4.gdb

3. copy blank ISC4.gdb from installation CD.

4. start interbase.

5. open that trouble_ISC4.gdb as SYSDBA/masterkey in any tool like ISQL, or IB Console, or Marathon or IBExpert - anything your feel yourself comfort in.

6. find the table and column where password hashes are.

7. open one more database - no the very ISC4.GDB

8. same as 5 - but for ISC4.GDB

9. copy password hash for 'SYSDBA' user from fresh ISC4.GDB to old trouble_ISC4.gdb

10. close databases, shutdown IB process(es)

11. delete new ISC4 and restore old one (mv trouble_ISC4.gdb isc4.gdb)

12. start IB and test if SysDba password been reversed to masterkey.

PS: the hash function is well known, and if needed You can take a sample from many places, for example www.iBase.ru
But for one-time task it is simplier to just copy hash without thought about function itself.

Thanks guys.

I'm splitting the points between you two, but this time am giving you both 250 points each.

You guys have really helped me a lot in this and the other 'db data retrieval' problems.

Thanks you again.
