Question

Firebird 64-bit ODBC fails to connect to GDB file

Asked by: ukjerry2

We have an application that requires that a firebird odbc system DSN be set up.  This has always functioned well in 32-bit Windows Server environments.
For the first time we tried to set the same app up on a 64-bit Server 2008. We have tried both the 32-bit and 64 bit Firebird ODBC drivers but both fail to connect with the error message 'Open Database c:\program files\appointments\appointmentspro.gdb failed'.  Has anyone else encountered this or have a solution?

I assume you have a problem with the file system virtualization feature. Is the database located in "Program Files" or "Program Files (x86)"?

by: ukjerry2Posted on 2009-11-05 at 07:28:31ID: 25750464

Actually the database is located in c:\db ... as a standalone file. And it doesn't seem to matter where we locate it - the ODBC connection simply fails to open the gdb.

Firebird itself is 32 bit and running fine as a service on the server - we know it is running OK because other applications are able to interact with it.

Thanks,

Jerry

by: QlemoPosted on 2009-11-05 at 07:41:28ID: 25750641

But from the path shown above you see the c:\db folder is not queried ...
As I don't know FireBird - do you supply only a database name, or complete path with the connection properties in ODBC?

by: ukjerry2Posted on 2009-11-05 at 08:03:36ID: 25750866

Sorry - the path shown was for example purposes only. Yes, the complete path (whatever it is) is entered into the ODBC connection dialog.

by: QlemoPosted on 2009-11-05 at 10:27:33ID: 25752350

Since I do not know what is running behind the scenes with Firebird, I only can recommend using filemon resp. procmon (www.sysinternals.com, free), with filter set to the gdb file name, to get information about why the file cannot be opened.

by: ukjerry2Posted on 2009-11-06 at 00:19:44ID: 25757481

could you expand on 'using filemon resp. procmon' as I'm not sure I understand this phrase?

by: QlemoPosted on 2009-11-06 at 04:37:09ID: 25758567

Sigh, I wanted to avoid that :-D
I don't know whether FileMon works on 64bit, but ProcMon will. It can record any activity of processes, like file or registry access. With the appropriate filter, e.g. on the process name, we can see where files are expected, what is checked aso.

Still no further forward. Is there really no-one out there who has used 64-bit firebird odbc?

by: aikimarkPosted on 2009-11-23 at 19:40:17ID: 25893921

How did you define the ODBC connection data source?
Did you test the ODBC connection (from the ODBC admin dialog)?

by: ukjerry2Posted on 2009-11-24 at 04:24:05ID: 25896414

Settings>Control Panel>ODBC>System DNS Tab>Add
DataSourceName=SMSReminders
Driver=IscDbc
Description=SMSReminders
Database=D:\Program Files (x86)\SpectraSoft\Appointments\UEALive\APPOINTMENTSPRO.GDB
Database Account=SYSDBA
Password=masterkey
[No other fields changed from defaults]

On clicking 'Test Connection' error message is produced: "Open database 'D:\program files (x86)\SpectraSoft\Appointments\UEALive\APPOINTMENTSPRO.GDB' failed"

This happens irrespective of the lcoaiton of the gdb file.

FIrebird is running correctly and the appointmentspro.gdb file can be accessed correctly by e.g. IBConsole

by: aikimarkPosted on 2009-11-24 at 05:16:42ID: 25896796

What is the reason (error?) for the connection test failure?

by: ukjerry2Posted on 2009-11-24 at 07:24:43ID: 25897951

Apart from the error message itself (above) no reason is given.... how could I identify a reason?

Thanks for your continued efforts no this one.

by: ukjerry2Posted on 2009-11-24 at 10:12:59ID: 25899776

Additional Info:

1) when turning on the ODBC trace tool and testing the connection, the log file does not contain any data.

2) When running procmon and testing the connection, no activity is visible

Thanks,

Jerry

When you tried the 32-bit version, did you use odbcad32.exe to create the ODBC data source?

Which version of the drivers are you using for the 64-bit access?
http://www.firebirdsql.org/download/prerelease/odbc/OdbcFb_DLL_RC1_2-0-0148_x64.zip

by: ukjerry2Posted on 2009-11-25 at 02:08:39ID: 25905667

In each case (32-bit / 64 bit)I did not click directly on an executable - I went to the Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Data Sources (ODBC).

After the 64-bit driver failed to work I uninstalled it and then installed the 32-bit driver which also failed to work. I have now re-installed the 64-bit driver in order to carry on trouble-shooting.

Yes, I am using the RC1 64-bit driver downloaded from the url above.

did you use the 32-bit ODBC administration dialog?

by: ukjerry2Posted on 2009-11-25 at 04:50:14ID: 25906553

Yes - see comment ID:25896414 above.

by: aikimarkPosted on 2009-11-25 at 05:32:07ID: 25906881

I meant, are you using odbcad32.exe?
This is a specific question that was not answered by your http:#25896414 description of the dialog.

by: ukjerry2Posted on 2009-11-25 at 06:37:49ID: 25907416

OK.. I do not know what specific executable I was using, as in order to reach the dialog I ran the Data Sources (ODBC) icon from the Administrative tools in the windows control panel.

Should I be doing something different than  this?

by: ukjerry2Posted on 2009-11-25 at 08:06:02ID: 25908333

New information: I attempted to use the 'Users' tab on the Firebird ODBC Service dialog. On clicking the 'Get Info' button, the following error message is produced:

  • odbc-error.jpg
    • 15 KB

    Error produced within Firebird 64-bit ODBC Users dialog

    Error produced within Firebird 64-bit ODBC Users dialog

by: QlemoPosted on 2009-11-25 at 08:09:58ID: 25908379

If you start the ODBC Administrator via Start Menu, it will use the 64bit version of odbcad32.exe (in system32, while the 32bit version is in SysWOW64). Both executables have the same name.

by: netperfPosted on 2009-11-25 at 08:14:58ID: 25908428

We were just having the exact same problem.  Ran the odbcad32.exe located in C:\windows\SysWOW64 and then the connection succeeded.

by: ukjerry2Posted on 2009-11-25 at 08:50:14ID: 31658700

The question not asked, but which proved critical, was whether the user application was a 32-bit 0r 64-bit app. As it turned out, because it was a 32-bit app, use of the 64-bit Firebird driver was inappropriate. This meant that the 32-bit driver had to be used, and thus Olemo's observation re the respective location of the relevant odbcad32.exe files was the key to unlocking this puzzle

by: aikimarkPosted on 2009-11-25 at 09:25:40ID: 25909245

I didn't realize that the 64-bit version of the ODBC administration applet was named odbcad32.exe.  That seems like a recipe for the exact kind of problems you experienced.  Glad we could help.

===========
NOTE:
If anyone reads this and works for Microsoft, rename this odbcad64.exe.
