The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Methods of Defining Group Membership
Tags: C#, LDAP Directory Configuration
Is it possible to configure an (any) LDAP directory to contain static groups that have no 'member' atributes within them - but purely have group membership defined by the "groupMembership" attribute within user DNs?

- I'm writing a solution and trying to support as wider range of LDAP directories and configurations as possible.

Thanks.

What would rather defeat the point of a Static Group wouldn't it?

Generally speaking it should be possible to enumerate a Static Group by looking at an attribute which contains the members of the group.

If there isn't such an attribute then the group membership must be dynamic as it requires a full directory search to enumerate the membership. That search must be performed every time the membership for the group is expanded.

You can see this kind of behaviour in the MS Active Directory.

We have Static Groups which include a "member" attribute as well as the memberOf attribute of the user account.

We also have Dynamic Groups where membership is evaluated via an LDAP query whenever the membership is required.

It doesn't particularly matter that membership of the Dynamic Group isn't performed via an attribute called "groupMembership" (it could be if we were willing to add it to the Schema) the key is that all directory entries must be evaluated for membership whenever expansion is required.

Thanks for the response.

Would it defeat the purpose of the static group?  Logically?  In this scenario, would the group entry not still exist as a descriptive container for all the members, effectively containing attributes that could be applied to all the members?

I've already handled dynamic groups with the memberQueryURL attribute (or equivalent) but just wanted to cover all the bases.

So, just to confirm, no LDAP implementation could every feasibly operate in this fashion?

> Would it defeat the purpose of the static group?

Well, yes :)

Logically there's no difference between what you're proposing and a dynamic group with a memberQueryURL attribute.

To evaluate a group based on a "groupMembership" attribute which only exists on the member object you must perform a full directory query to be sure of the membership.

That means the group membership for the group in question is only available at a point in time as the result of the query, hence Dynamic membership evaluation.

Clearly a full directory query carries a much higher performance cost than a simple static group where members are defined on the group itself which should be considered when trying to make the Directory perform efficiently.

Naturally the response could be cached which would improve performance again. Unfortunately such an action makes the group less useful than a traditional static group as membership may be horribly out of date when the query is executed (if a cached response is given).

> So, just to confirm, no LDAP implementation could every feasibly operate in this fashion?

It's really that what you're describing is a Dynamic Group in x500 / LDAP terms. Membership can only be enumerated at expansion time, rather than existing as a passive or static value.

Hope that makes sense!
