The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Fundamentals on record matching and updating

Asked by dba123 in Databases Miscellaneous

Tags: matching, record

I am asking what I believe to be a fundamental question...maybe easy for some to give me an answer and which may seem simple.

I have updated many records through imports, etc. by using match fields....unique field combinations in tables on which record updates are based on to ensure that you are matching updates to the correct records that exist in a database.

For exmple, a match field for a contact table may be this (FirstName + LastName + AddLine1 + City + State + Zip + Phone)

Ok, this is all find and dandy when using match fields to update records and to find unique records that exist in a database.  But lets take it a step further.  Let's say that you have ContactTable1 from Database1 and ContactTable2 from a  completely external Database2.  You want to take ContactTable1, import them to do an update to the ContactTable2's contacts using your unique match field that you set up.

My quesiton is this: even if you use a match field, this will not ensure 100% that you will match records if the contacts exist in both tables.  There will undoubtedly be user error for example whereas in ContactTable1, John Smith might have an AddLine1 of 1433 Good Lane and then in ContactTable2, that same John Smith's AddLine1 may have been entered incorrectly as 1432 Good Lane....or even in a different format whereas Lane might be Ln.

And there will always be instances where you will be working for a company who either never had a DBA or will come across this even if they are a huge company with a large user base.  How does one attack the variations in 2 or more tables on data like this when trying to do matching.....or even cleansing data to match the data entry standard of other tables in other systems in your organization?
