The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Feedback of the Community

storing calculable fields problem 500 points!

Hi,

This is somewhat of a general database question, but ultimately I'll probably want to implement a solution in postgresSQL (or other large scale capable database).

Its to do with storing calculable fields.  Naturally in a normalized database no calculable fields would be stored since that would result in two different ways to get the same value, and if the stored value is not updated correctly, there would be two different values causing havoc for database integrety and any programmers which may be using the database.  That said, consider this scenario.

In a particular enterprise class database (mine) it is possible in software to caluclate when a product which is out of stock, will be comming back into stock.

This is done by using a complex algoritm incorporating , the reliability of the supplier, the popularity of the item being sold, the suppliers minimum order etc etc.   This inevitably is quite a complex calculation, the result of which may change on a daily or weekly basis (i.e. not very frequently).

My problem is, every time my program needs this value which is around 50 -100 times per minute, it has to do the processor intensive, time consuming calculation each time.

My question is,  how can I avoid entering a calculable field into the database while keeping my application efficient?  Can views be used for this, or some kind of stored procendure which is updated every time a field in the database which may change its result is changed?
