Is it possible to query a table using column index rather than name?

i was wondering if it is possible to query a table by passing column indices, rather than the column name. By indices I mean a table with 10 columns would have them indexed 0-9, sort of like an array. I don't know if SQL Server 2000 supports this, and I know that an "index" is something different when referring to databases.

I have an ASP page where you select checkboxes for which columns of a table to display, and then this data is passed as a string form variable to the page that has all the DB access code. So if you check of columns named "name", "address" and "phone", the string passed to the results page, lets call it X, is "name, address, phone" which is then used to create a string to query the database, by doing something like "SELECT " + X + " FROM table..."

I could see an overflow problem arising if you select too many columns, or column names that are too long. So, I wanted to send the indices of the columns instead of their names.
