Looking for suggestions about which DB/other I should use for Application development

Ok, this might be a strange question. I have an application that acquires information from devices and such. Currently the application stores data in raw binary data files within directories on the computer. As I upgrade my software I am continually concerned over changes to the structure of the data stored in those files (nothing new here since this is a common problem). I have created cover function and padded my structures with extra filler that can be expanded into as the need for more data items arises; however, as you might expect this solution is a pain in the tail end.

So, I am considering moving my data from the raw data files over to an SQL Database. However, I would like a database that is more geared towards simply storing application data rather then sharing data between users. Something that I could treat like it was just a binary data file that only my application had access too. I dont want users using any interface other then my program to change the data in the database. For instance, I dont want them to even have access to any other application that they might consider using to modify the data other then my application (for instance, if I use Access then they might try to use Access to get into the data files).

Basically I am looking for something that is transparent to the user. Something that just seems like my program is saving data in its own data files using its own methods. It doesnt have to be SQL, but it does have to allow me to reference data by name rather then by byte position in the data file. I hope Im making sense.

This solution must be accessible through VB6. And I would prefer not to use Access because it is not transparent enough.
