Question

Renaming A Column

Asked by: mnashadka

Does anyone know how to rename a column in a Progress query done through ODBC? I can't just say something like:
SELECT description AS desc FROM descriptions

I get an error from that.  I've also tried SELECT description desc FROM descriptions.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

SELECT description AS 'desc' FROM descriptions

by: mnashadkaPosted on 2005-03-07 at 15:07:24ID: 13481969

That doesn't work either.

by: jrb1Posted on 2005-03-07 at 17:55:08ID: 13482888

Strange....that's exactly what the Progress documentation says to use.  What kind of an error are you getting?

by: SkipFirePosted on 2005-03-07 at 19:05:12ID: 13483128

Try
SELECT description desc FROM descriptions
or
SELECT description [desc] FROM descriptions
or
SELECT description As [desc] FROM descriptions

If these don't work what is your error message?

by: mnashadkaPosted on 2005-03-08 at 05:57:45ID: 13486109

For most of the things that you gave me to try, the error was:
General SQL error.
[INTERSOLV][ODBC SequeLink driver][Progress]** Unable to understand after -- "DECLARE". (247)
[INTERSOLV][ODBC SequeLink driver][Progress]** Invalid statement. (254)

Except for the SELECT description [desc] FROM descriptions gave me:
General SQL error.
[INTERSOLV][ODBC SequeLink driver][Progress]** Unable to understand after -- "SELECT description [". (247)
[INTERSOLV][ODBC SequeLink driver][Progress]** Unmatched square bracket, or missing expression in subscript. (397)

(And yes, I checked to make sure the brackets were closed.)

By the way, thanks for your help.

Is this part of a larger statement?  If so can you paste the whole thing?  What database system are you using?

by: mnashadkaPosted on 2005-03-08 at 06:39:01ID: 13486486

That's the error message that I get using Borland's database explorer.  If I use SQL Server and a linked database, I get the exact same error (with the OLE DB crap in front of it).

Progress is the database system.  Is that what you mean?

OK, so ODBC is messing you up...how about:

select * from
(SELECT description AS 'desc' FROM descriptions)

by: mnashadkaPosted on 2005-03-08 at 09:32:13ID: 13488306

That doesn't seem to work either.

by: LarsjePosted on 2005-03-09 at 00:57:34ID: 13494047

Isn't desc a reserved word ? (I don't know if that's your example, or your real query)
I don't know if it's the same, but in mysql, you have a statement like: "desc tablename; " that gives you the description of your table.
try using another word for (and maybe for 'description' too)

by: SkipFirePosted on 2005-03-09 at 04:59:58ID: 13495241

DESC is a keyword on Oracle but not on SQL.  I'm not sure if it is on progress.

by: mnashadkaPosted on 2005-03-09 at 07:19:34ID: 13496657

Yes, desc is a reserved word, but I'm not really using that in the query anyway.  I'm still getting the same results.

None of this worked, but thanks for trying.
