The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. database security for CD application

I have to develop a database application that is to be shipped on a CD. Due to previous work and company tradition, I will probably use MS Access, but that is not a restriction.

The data contained on the CD are very sensitive and should not be accessible to users except via my application (i.e. users should not be able to open the DB and view the data). As far as I know, the password feature that comes with MS Access databases doesn't provide the level of security that I need (it takes about 5 seconds to find the password with any decent password cracker)

Therefore, I am thinking of encrypting the data in the DB by means of a key that each user would receive when registering the CD application via the telephone or internet. This means that each record in the DB is encrypted, so one would not be able to use the data, if one would be able to open the DB. The application itself would use the key to decrypt the data upon selecting it from the DB.

Do you have any idea how this could be accoplished? What kind of encryption algorithm should I use and what would be its effect on the DB? Could there possibly be a way to handle the data decryption directly by means of SQL? Do you know of different ways to approach this security problem?
