Can't speak for all database but Oracle won't let you create another object with the same name nor will it let you create a differently named index on the same table and columns (assuming exact column order).
Why not just try to create it and let it fail?
To check the name in Oracle: select index_name from user_indexes where index_name='MY_NAME';

What sort of index? How do you want to look...by name, index type, etc?
