Question

Asked by: DataField

Experts,

Currenlty all DB in my company is on SQL Server 2000 and we plan to build another DB server with SQL Server 2005 to take the place.

I am wondering what is the best way to perform the migration?

I guess the migration of system DB is not supported by SQL Server, right? If so, what is best way to perfrom the migration of JOB/DTS package/Replication/Log in........

How to perform User DB migration.

That would be great if you could explain it as detailed as possiable.

Thanks and Regards

Hi,

migrating is actually quite easy.
Just make a full backup on the SQL Server 2000 and
install it on the Yukon machine.
SQL Server itself will make necessary changes (actually in almost no time - it is super fast).

Andy, Thanks a lot for your reply.

Sorry I don't understand what you are saying, what is Yukon machine?

Could you do me a favor to explain the detail steps? I tried, and the system DB full backup can be restored on SQL Server 2005 because of the version issue. The user DB full backup can be restored.

Regards

hello,
migration from 2000 to 2005 is a quite automatic. You only should have a backup (only for your security) and install 2005 over 2000. after the setup process you will have sql2005 with all your data migrated.

ok, I took it that you have 2 different machines, 1 with SQL Server 2000 and one with SQL Server 2005 (also known as YUKON).
thats why i said to make a backup of your complete database on the 2000, and go to the 2005 machine where you can play in the backup.
i don't recommend installing the SQL Server 2005 over an existing SQL Server 2000.

Thanks for you guys' reply.

Right, currently I have 2 different machines. One is SQL Server 2000 (server2000), another one is SQL server 2005 (server2005), and I want to use SQL Server 2005 one to take the place of SQL Server 2000 one.

Is that ok that I do the following steps?

1. upgrade the sql server 2000 to 2005 on server2000.
2. copy all data files from server2000 to server2005 (same path)
3. start SQL server on server2005.

Do you think it is going to work by this way?

Hi,

personally í would not upgrade the 2000 machine. since you have already two machines, it would be better to
first install the 2005 an set it up. then you make the backup on your sql 2000 server and transfer the file to the 2005 machine.
there you install the backup and let it run.
then u use the time to set up the 2005 server on the first machine completely from the scratch - so you got a perfect installation.
after that you use the new SQL 2005 feature "snapshot copy" to quickly copy the db from the second server (2005) to the first server (now 2005 too).

Actually my conern is the system database, I test it and the sytem DB datafiles are not compatiable between SQL Server 2000 and 2005.

That is why I want to upgrade the sql server 2000 to 2005 first, then transfer the data files for all system DB and User DB to the new Sql Server 2005 server.

Thanks.

My another concern is the SQL Server setting, because I plan to implement 'failover cluster' feature in the new SQL server 2005 server. If I transfer the master DB datafiles from the old server to the new server, I am going to lose the setting, right?

Thanks

Probably I could only transfter the system data files for MSDB, if so I could keep all JOB and DTS package. And I could restore the backup file for all other User DB.

Thanks.
