Crash Course in Database Design...

Looking for any resources for database development and structuring. Also what type of database software would be best to work with in order to maximize efficiency; Oracle, MySQL, ETC... I am a novice at best with design but can handle the coding element.

We will be working on a ecommerce website that will consist of several databases linked together, or atleast that is the best way to do it through my limited experience, please correct me if I'm wrong. User/Customer Database, Sales/Inventory Database, and Product Information Database. There might be other information that will need to be expanded on once we get a complete design in place.
