The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Data store for small Windows forms app in VS2005 guidance please.

Asked by FJRMill in Databases Miscellaneous, Visual Studio, Microsoft Visual Basic.Net

Dear experts ..   Im hoping that someone will be able to advise me on a very basic issue regarding the storage of data for a small, stand-alone windows app in VB.net.

On paper, I have designed a Windows Forms system that I would like to implement using VB in VS2005.  I need for the app to have flexible access to a database (ie, it needs to build ad-hoc queries on the data), but I want to avoid the need for the users of the system to have SQL Server or the latest version of MS Access installed on their systems.

I am pretty new to visual studio. I have bought and have been picking over books on Visual Studio, .NET, SQL Server, and Visual Basic .NET and have subscribed to LearnVisualStudio.net.    These suggest that SQL Server express is the way to go (although it is possible to use am MS Access database, but with less functionality?).  Thing is .. none of the stuff I have read has given options for the small app scenario..

Please could I open a discussion about which is the best dbms to use in this situation?

My proposed system is very simple, but WILL need to:
-      Provide distribution/installation files over the web (probably using Download.com or the like);
-      NOT require the end user to have to install or manage a database server system outside of my app.

Im looking for:
a) some reassurance that using VS2005, I should be able to develop a self-contained system to include its own database files;
b) a steer on which way to go ..
c) where I can find appropriate, further detailed guidance

your opinions would be very much appreciated!

I will set the question with maximum points, and share these amongst the most useful couple of responses. Very many thanks.
