SQL2005 DEV on x64 Vista

Hi there,

I have just got a new box with Vista ultimate x64 (ordered my windows 7 upgrade).

Basically I have visual Studio 2008 that came with a MSDN disc that contained a full version of sql 2005 developer edition. For some reason this doesn't work when I install it... I can't browse to the server I created with it; i.e. I created server instance SQL2005DE when I created it but i can't browse to this from no where.

Is it not possible to install this on x64 if it's a 32-bit installer? It installed but did givem e some warnings, zero errors but gave 3 warninigs.

Any insight here would be helpful.

As a workaround I have thought of downloading sql 2005 64-bit express version- would I be able to restore a 32-bit back-up to a 64-bit express instance?

Can you post the exact error message or warning message which you encountered to help better or point you in the right direction

This sounds like a firewall issue... if you can't browse for the SQL Server Instance from another PC.

I presume you can use the SQL Management Studio to attach to the instance locally?

To answer the question about the backups... yes they are compatible, but you can do one better... you can just do a "detach" from the old and then an "attach" to the new SQL Server instance.
