Question

Open a db extension database with excel or access or something

Asked by: PatKung

Need to open a database that was built with the Borland Database engine.  I only need to see the table data and copy it to an excel sheet.

Is there an easy way to do this?
Thanks, Pat

Pat,

To get the database data in excel, The first step is to figuring out  a odbc connector which will act a connector or you can say bridge between two formats, The above path give you various connectors which are available.

the easiest way might be, is to open the db, then see what options you have in the Export or SaveAs.

That is the first problem, I haven't found any way to open the db.  If I had then I would just copy the data and drop it in an excel sheet.
Thanks, pat

sometime ago, before I used Access, our office had an old db, from the Form, we had a few options to print, so I printed to a text file, then converted it to mdb.

is there a way to see this db?

by: PatKungPosted on 2009-11-06 at 13:22:14ID: 25763176

It is a db from Easy Worship software.  They told me it is a database created with a Borland engine database.  They provide no method to export songs data to import into a different program.  We are moving to Media Shout software and didn't want to have to redo all our work on the songs database.  I have tried to open it with Excel and Access 2003 and 2007 versions.  The Media Shout people said it should be able to open with those applications, but it doesn't.  I have tried renaming the extension to dbf and mdb.  Nothing works.
Have also tried to open a blank database in access and connect using get external data, more, and tried Paradox file, dBase file, and ODBC database, but not sure I chose all the right things on the ODBC one.
Went to the link above and downloaded and installed the JEDI Database Desktop and clicked on the Songs.db file and did an "open with" the Jedi program but it didn't work either.
Any other thoughts?
Thanks, Pat

If I could see the records, I wouldn't be asking the question.  :)
Here is the line of instructions from Media Shout which gives some indication of the type of data in the table.
"In Excel, delete all columns except for Title, Author, Copyright, Words. The "Words" column contains the song lyrics in EasyWorship XML format"
Does this help?
Thanks, Pat

the freeware Notepad++ from http://notepad-plus.sourceforge.net/uk/site.htm

I opened it as txt, but it needs a lot of cleaning up, but the data is there.

I will spend a few more minutes on it, and will let you know what I get.

If you wish, I can send you the txt file, maybe you have a better way to clean it??

by: jjafferrPosted on 2009-11-06 at 16:35:16ID: 25764354

Hi Pat

Attached is the best that I can do.
The Song.txt is the whole db converted to txt,
the Song_Almost_clean.txt is the file I worked on, you can continue working working on, just double click on the ### and hit the carriage return, to put the data on the next line.

Before you go this way, I would recommend you to try look further in other programs which can transfer the data cleanly.

good luck with your project.

Didn't get it at any email address.  My home one has been kind of flaky lately, if you tried the one I used to "SendThisFile".  Could you try the one on my profile?  I just updated it so it shows.

jaffer,
I can easily clean this up with search and replace.  Hope you didn't spend too much time working on it.  If you just send me the txt files I would appreciate it.
Thanks, Pat

If there is someone who knows a program that would open it up and already have it in a column format, that would be great.
Thanks, Pat

Jaffer,
Looks like you put a lot of time into this and I really appreciate it.  It appears after seeing the data in the file it is missing the lyrics to the songs, which is not your fault.  I am going to give you the points for the effort.  Have a great day.
Thanks, Pat
