Question

mySQL Connection Problems

Asked by: stesherlock

Hi all,

I'm having one hell of a time trying to connect to mySQL from a remote host. My user table looks like this:

+-----------+------------------+------------------+-------------+-------------+-------------+-------------+-------------+-----------+-------------+---------------+--------------+-----------+------------+-----------------+------------+------------+

I can connect fine from the local host, but when I try and connect from a remote machine I get the error "Cannot connect to mysql host on 'hq.i-oss.net'".

I'm running debian linux and mysql 3.23.

Thanks in advance,

Stephen Sherlock

I forgot to mention - it doesn't matter whether I try to connect with es-spire, root or horde from the remote host - none of them work :(

I believe that you forgot to reload mysql.
after creating/modifzing users you always have to reload or simply use
"mysqladmin flush-privileges" from the command line for changes in the user-table to take effect.
on phpMyAdmin there is a "reload mysql" option as well.
I hope this helps.

horde etc have no rights, not even SELECT
I guess they should **at least*** have that one

My supposition is that the remote machine doesn't access the mysqld server

could you temporarily do :
GRANT ALL PRIVILEGES ON * TO root@% IDENTIFIED BY PASSWORD('yourpâssword');
flush privileges

and then try from rmeote ?

then REVOKE privileges one after the other until you find the smallest subset needed by your application

may-be Uzo is tight too.
Anywa, trying this ins equence should lead to a conclusion
1) flush privileges
2) GRANT ALL, flush
3) check connectivity

ok. I have a better idea:
if it was a privilege problem , the error returned would be "access denied".
"Cannot connect" is a connection problem.

-either there is no network connectivity, or
-the port is firewalled, or
-mysql isn't listening on the network interface (only on 127.0.0.1)

try to ping the mysql host. if that does not work, check your network connectivity.
if ping works fine, try a connection via telnet :
"telnet hostname 3306"
3306 is the mysql standard port number.
if the connection is refused, mysql isn't listening on that interface or the port is firewalled.
if the connection times out, the port is either firewalled or you suffer some very strange network problems. if all that does not help, try to give mor details. good luck!

I'd say from what you all have said, it's most likely that mySQL isn't listening on all the network interfaces I need it to.

I'm running Debian Linux, so how would I go about setting it to listen on all addresses?

Thanks.

Ahhhhhh, sussed.

My distro has the line "skip-networking" enabled by default in the my.cnf file for security reasons. Just commented out the line and everything works now. The points will go to Uzo, since he was the first to suggest that the server wasn't listening on the correct addresses :)

Hmmmmmm. How does:

"first to suggest that the server wasn't listening on the correct addresses "

relate to:

"My supposition is that the remote machine doesn't access the mysqld server"

It was obvious that the remote machine couldn't access the server - that was the problem I was posting about. What I wanted to know was how to fix it ;)

connectivity

by: stesherlockPosted on 2003-05-01 at 10:52:13ID: 8437203

The connection to the server itself was fine, the problem was mysqld not listening out on port 3306.
