Hi!
What happens if some guy reverse-engineers the MySQL communication protocol and creates his own client library without ever looking at (or using) any of the code written by MySQL AB ?

In preparation for a new article at www.vbmysql.com I would like everyone's input on something. I will be doing an interview-style article on the different MySQL Licensing Options with a representative from MySQL AB, and in the interview I will be presenting different scenarios to get MySQL AB's explanation of the different licenses that would apply to those scenarios.
As I like my articles to be relevant to the reader, I would love to have some input on what questions to ask and have answered in the course of the interview. I would greatly appreciate it if you would provide your input.
Now I know this is not a technical question, but I am valuing the points at 500 to be split by those who provide their input. Thanks for your help.

Here is one I've been wondering about. I've read the license agreement at MySQL and I'm still not sure.
As a programmer, am I free to develop web applications for clients that use a mysql database or do I have to purchase a license? Furthermore, if I develop one web application that is sold to several clients (customized to suit their unique requirements, if any) am I required to purchase mulitple licenses?
I used to think that MySQL was completely free to use but recently took a look at their licensing page and now believe that is not the case...at least in the scenarios above. I've asked a couple of other people and it seems that I'm not the only one who isn't sure.

What is MySQL AB's take on this business going on with PHP? It seems that, starting with PHP5, MySQL support is not going to be included by default any longer, that there's apparently a conflict over licensing...? I've read what's posted at php.net about this, and I'm still not completely clear on just what the deal is.
Thanks, and Good Luck with your article.
