Question

mysql timing out... errors 10048 and 10061

Asked by: funkytaz10

hi,

i installed a phptracker with a mysql database behind it... everything works pretty fine except after a few hours my database begins giving white screen witht he 10048 or 10061 errors...

i know that it are not the processors (using a dual processor server) because they never peak... they always stay around 50%cpu time...

the bttracker is working with maximum 1600 peers for the moment... so this can not give that much traffic...

the strange thing is that it seems too happen every time when my virusscanner is finished... virusscanner is a norton corporate 8...

this is my "my.ini " file from the mysql database

If you have a router hooked up, turn off Norton virus scanner.
If you don't have a router, buy something like a Netgear FR114W. It will be the best $60 you ever spent,
and will allow you to turn off your virus scanner so that it doesn't interfere with MySQL.

i have IPCOP as router firewall between the intenet and the webserver.... but don't understand what that has to do with virusses?? if somebody upload a virus with the ".torrent" extension , than my whole server can be compromissed??

i didn't say that i am 100% sure that it is norton too... or are you 100% sure it is the scanner.. i can exclude him from scanning the mysql directory...

Just a wild guess, but it may be that the virus scanner locks the file and the MySQL server wants to write/read to it? Try telling the scanner not to scan mysql/data folder and see what happens...

Viruses can't do any harm unless they can find a way to be executed.
If you use a good router/firewall you will have blocked 99.9% of the paths into your computer,
thus preventing a large number of virus attacks. If you only open up port 80 on your router
then there is only two ways the virus can get in: either through your HTTP server, or your email.
If you never execute any programs you receive via email, then viruses cannot hurt you (unless
you are using a Microsoft email program, in which case all bets are off).
The only two ways a virus could hurt you through port 80 is if they attacked the HTTP server itself,
or you uploaded a virus to your machine and explicity executed it. You shouldn't be allowing users to execute
any programs that they upload.

It's a little more complicated then simply telling Norton to stop scanning the mysql directory,
because MySQL sets up a port that Norton may be shutting down, and the port doesn't reside
in the mysql directory.

Am I positive Norton is causing the problem? No, but I've heard other people complain about it
with respect to MySQL.
