Local Installation of Mysql (No root password)

hello Evreyone ...I am trying to set up a mysql db on my local machine.I do not have the root passowrd.Please direct me on how I should I get started.Should I use a Binary version or the source distribution.In either case how should I get started .i would appreciate your help .

You don't say *nix or Windows, but, regardless, there are a number of ways to recover the root password to a MySQL database:

I can verify that these methods work.  The basic concept is to restart the database server without ANY security, then modify the password in the users table directly.

I am so sorry I was not clear on my question .

I ment " How do I Install MYsql server on my local machine" (LINUX) ....I do not have the root previalges so how do I do this.

Once again I am sorry for not being clear enough

What Linux distro?  The easiest way to do it would be using an automatic package installed like Up2Date for RedHat or eMerge for Gentoo.

Here's a list of RPM and detailed instructions for installing one of them.

But dont the RPM's require the "root" password for installation.My situation is this....due to certain difficulties(overload) I am unable to access the mysql server on my main machine.But since I want to test my application I am planning to have a local mysql server on which I can work on ...

i.e a mysql installed on

/home/myName/mysql not the default ...

Hi,

I think in this case you have to install the mysql using source..

Download the source and extract..
cd to the extracted folder..

./configure \
--prefix=/home/myName/mysql \
--localstatedir=/home/myName/mysql/data \
