MySQL Down along with DBD:mysql

I'm very new at this but, I was told in the past when MySQL went down it was due to DBD:mysql being down. This is what I'm getting when trying to ping MySQL, as far as DBD:mysql I don't know how to test it.

root@host /# mysqladmin ping
mysqladmin: connect to server at 'localhost' failed
error: 'Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/tmp/mysql.sock' (2)'
Check that mysqld is running and that the socket: '/tmp/mysql.sock' exists!
