Well it's more of a generic SQL question I think so I thought it might fit in both areas?

Sadly, SQL dialacts creep in.  The SQL posted there has some functions that are not implemented in MySQL:

CONVERT() is different in MySQL than in MS SQL
TO_CHAR() is not supported in MySQL

There may or may not be more (I'm not a MS SQL expert).

What I'm looking for is more of a general solution regardless of the dialects and quirks within each I realize that they are not all exactly alike and have their own custom functions, etc.

How do you run a query to pull monthly data for multiple months with beginning and ending balances for each month? I think that can be achieved on any of the paltforms using SQL language and that would give me direction as how to solve my problem.
