Sorry tha was a typo in my post, too much of a hurry;
executing this:
WHERE active = 1 AND (a_1 <> '' OR a_2 <> '' OR a_3 <> '')
yields this:
ERROR 1064: You have an error in your SQL syntax near '<> '')' at line 2

Was working when I was comparing to a value but now that I changes to <> '' I get the error. Can anyone give me insight here?

this should work
select * from myTable
