how can I Insert the entire row if Not Exist  and Update if exist ?

Are you using Oracle?

If you are then you can use the %NOTFOUND to conditionally insert, else update.

Select <something> from table_name
if %NOTFOUND
INSERT INTO table_name
else
Update table_name set <something>

you can do this from a program by using three SQL statements plus conditional logic of the program

See if the row exisits
select id from some_table where id=y;

if id is not NULL
    inseret a new row
else  // row exists, just update it
   update the row where id=y

ok,
lest say I have an inter x=9
and a table of users( usersid, username,..)

if there is no userid = 9 insert the user (9,sam)
else update the row where userid = 9


now how can I whrite this in mysql?

Hi,

you could always use

replace into tablename(field1, field2) values (value1, value2)

which if the row already exists it will be deleted before the insert is done.

I found "REPLACE" slightly missleading.  It will either insert, or delete-and-insert.  This has an impact if you have triggers in place, as the "DELETE" triggers will fire.

There is also an ON DUPLICATE KEY UPDATE syntax "http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.0/en/insert-on-duplicate.html

INSERT INTO table (a,b,c) VALUES (1,2,3)
  ON DUPLICATE KEY UPDATE c=c+1;

UPDATE DEPART SET PARTNAME = 'HR '
WHERE DEPT_NO ='001';
