MySQL - Combining multiple 'select's into a single statement

Hello experts,

I'm struggling with a simple bit of SQL syntax. I've got two tables, and I'd like to do a select from each of them in one statement. My best guess is below - each of the select statements should have 10 results, but the statement below produces 100.

select * from (
(select id from foo f where
f.name = (select id from names where name = 'somename')
) as col1,
(select id from bar b where
b.name = (select id from names where name = 'somename')
) as col2
)

I guess I need to use the JOIN syntax to combine the two select statements, but I don't know how.
