The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

PHP 4.4.7 / MySQL 5

Asked by 1105media in MySQL Server, PHP for Windows, PHP and Databases

I've installed PHP 4.4.7 on my Windows XP box, and I'm also using IIS.  I've verified that PHP is running by creating a phpinfo page.

MySQL support is supposed to be built in.  I am trying to get an app running that connects to a mysql database, however the error I'm getting is that it cannot connect to the database.  Yes, the user and password are correct.  I'm using the root user to test.

I dug around some forums to find this script:

<?
echo mysql_get_client_info();
$conn = mysql_connect("localhost", "root", "myrootpassword");
?>

The output is:

3.23.49
Warning: mysql_connect() [function.mysql-connect]: Client does not support authentication protocol requested by server; consider upgrading MySQL client in c:\inetpub\wwwroot\test.php on line 3

I'm running MySQL 5 - obviously PHP is compiled for MySQL 3.23.49 - how can I recompile PHP 4 to be able to use MySQL 5?  Unfortunately the web app I'm using only supports PHP4, so I have to stick with 4.4.7.

Any ideas?  Are there DLLs that I can replace that will allow me to connect?

Also, I've ran a test script that shows that the MySQL client library needs to be upgraded - I've used MySQL Administrator to turn on old-passwords, still same error.  Can't connect to the database.Start Free Trial
