Question

Compare columns in two different tables for a partial string match.

I have two tables in my DB, they both have a column with similair data (in the form of an IP address ie : xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx) I need a query to compare the two tables containing the ip-addresses and find any matches based just on the first 5 characters of each IP address.

select  * from
table1 join table2
on substring(table1.ipaddress,1,5) = substring(table2.ipaddress,1,5)


depending on your database you may be required to change substring to the equivalen function to extract part of a string.

nevermind, I was able to use "LEFT" instead of "substr" and that worked, thanks for the hint in the rightdirection
