The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. Chosing between MySQL 5 and MS SQL Server 2000 for web application

We are currently evaluating DBMS options for a custom forum system we are going to be building.

There will be a forum component that will replace an existing vBulliten board, with features similar to vBulliten, PHP BB and FuseTalk, though obviously not as advanced as these solutions.  The current board has around 2.5 million rows it its database, these will be migrated to the new system, which is expected to grow quite a bit.

There will also be a separate, but related, user authentication database which will handle users for the forums, and also for other web services that will be built in the future.

Our existing stuff (and there's a lot of it) is all done in MS SQL 2000.  

I'm looking for reasons to chose MySQL vs MS SQL 2000.  MySQL is free, and it has functions that are easier to work with in my opinion (specifically, MS SQL 2000 does not have the LIMIT keyword for record paging logic).

Are there performance benefits to MS SQL if this is running on windows? Any other important things SQL will do that MySQL will not? How about administration effort? Backup capabilities?Start Free Trial
