Insert, update with unique key

I have a table t1:
a unique id
b arc id
c doc id
d user id
e rights
so a is unique with auto increment, but b,c,d are together also unique. i want to insert or update a entry:
insert into t1 set b = 7, c = 14, d = 15,  e = '' on duplicate key update rights=''
but it creates always a new entry with the right values but with "a" with new value. I tried replace but it create also a new entry.
How can i do it without getting "a" a new value value?

your syntax seems that you are using MySQL and not MS SQL Server 2005. can you clarify, please?

insert statement will always cretate a new entry, you need to use the update statement

assuming MySQL:
for the ON DUPLICATE KEY to work, the fields b,c,d need to be primary key.

Did you create a unique index (which is sufficent, it does not need to be a primary key) on the columns b,c,d so the ON DUPLICATE KEY UPDATE works correctly?

no i didnt... but i dont want to change the table now, later yes.

If you haven't on unique index the ON DUPLICATE KEY UPDATE does not work as no unique constraint is violated. So either change you logic in the program (do a select first, if a row is found, update the row, else insert a new row) or add the UNIQUE INDEX.
