Question

Lost connection to MySQL server at 'reading initial communication packet

Asked by: mindlessacts

Hi, I'm trying to run a php script on a VPS I just ordered and it keeps failing. I have php and mysql installed but I keep getting this error when trying to start the irc bot php script:

PHP Warning:  mysql_connect(): Lost connection to MySQL server at 'reading initial communication packet', system error: 111 in /root/SBot/bot.php on line 354
PHP Warning:  mysql_select_db(): Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock' (2) in /root/SBot/bot.php on line 355
PHP Warning:  mysql_select_db(): A link to the server could not be established in /root/SBot/bot.php on line 355
PHP Warning:  mysql_query(): Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock' (2) in /root/SBot/bot.php on line 356
PHP Warning:  mysql_query(): A link to the server could not be established in /root/SBot/bot.php on line 356
PHP Warning:  mysql_num_rows(): supplied argument is not a valid MySQL result resource in /root/SBot/bot.php on line 167

Any clue what this means.

Thanks, Brad

Possible fix is to try to:
Edit this file : /etc/mysql/my.cnf
End comment (#) this line : bind-address = 127.0.0.1

See if it works.

However sometimes badly written mysql query codes can cause this, which is probably what is happening in bot.php or other include files executing under bot.php.

Check exactly what is on line 354...

nizsmo I have no mysql folder in /etc but I do have a my.cnf in .etc, this is what it contains:

[mysqld]
datadir=/var/lib/mysql
socket=/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock
user=mysql
# Default to using old password format for compatibility with mysql 3.x
# clients (those using the mysqlclient10 compatibility package).
old_passwords=1

# To allow mysqld to connect to a MySQL Cluster management daemon, uncomment
# these lines and adjust the connectstring as needed.
#ndbcluster
#ndb-connectstring="nodeid=4;host=localhost:1186"

[mysqld_safe]
log-error=/var/log/mysqld.log
pid-file=/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.pid

[ndbd]
# If you are running a MySQL Cluster storage daemon (ndbd) on this machine,
# adjust its connection to the management daemon here.
# Note: ndbd init script requires this to include nodeid!
connect-string="nodeid=2;host=localhost:1186"

[ndb_mgm]
# connection string for MySQL Cluster management tool
connect-string="host=localhost:1186"

What would I change, if anything?

Also, here are the lines of code from 348-358:

$ircBot = bot::getInstance();
$ircBot->launch();
function m_q($query) {
      $host = 'domainname.net';
      $user = 'username';
      $pass = 'password';
      mysql_connect($host,$user,$pass);
      mysql_select_db('admin_bots');
      return mysql_query($query);
}
?>

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks, Brad

Add the line in the mysqld-section:

[mysqld]
datadir=/var/lib/mysql
socket=/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock
user=mysql
bind-address = 127.0.0.1

# Default to using old password format for compatibility with mysql 3.x
# clients (those using the mysqlclient10 compatibility package).
old_passwords=1

Ok I added the line: bind-address = 127.0.0.1

Unfortunately still no luck. I should add that I'm trying to connect to a remote mysql server not on this box. Not sure if that matters.

Anyways, any other possible solutions?

Thanks, Brad

In this case restart the remote mysql-server and check if the problem still occures.

I tried everything and still no luck :/ I ended up dropping the VPS and going for a cheap dedicated box, it fixed the issue.

Thanks anyways, mods please feel free to terminate this post

I know this topic is closed, but I just wanted to share a possible solution I discovered yesterday in case it's of use to anyone who stumbles upon this thread.

I grappled with this issue for several hours yesterday and I eventually got it working by matching the "remote address" in the SSH command to the bind-address value in the my.cnf file on the remote server.  For most people, the bind-address value is 127.0.0.1, but I have my MySQL server bound to a local network address (192.168.0.x).  The correct command for me, therefore, was:

ssh -v -f -N -L 3307:192.168.0.1:3306 user@host.server.com

It seems that the "remote address" in the SSH command is the value used by MySQL to associate the tunneled user with an IP address.  Depending on your configuration, MySQL likely either refuses connections from remote IPs or only allows the user you are logging in as to log in from locahost.  Since we can't self-identify as "localhost" (we have to force TCP activity) we need to use an IP address, and that IP address needs to be whatever MySQL identifies as its own.  This is the value of bind-address.  In many cases, this is going to be 127.0.0.1 (that's why you see this proposed solution everywhere), but that's not always the case.  Check your bind-address value!

In short, if you're getting an error in the the "Channel x open failed: connect failed: Connection refused" universe, make sure that the "remote address" in your ssh command matches the bind-address value on your remote machine.

Here are my full notes from yesterday: http://themetricsystem.rjmetrics.com/2009/01/06/php-mysql-and-ssh-tunneling-port-forwarding/

I hope this is helpful to someone.
